rebuilt turbo???
hello, Im replacing my exhaust gasket on my 1993 300d-602, broke the stud next to the fire wall!!!!!! did the same on my 603 diesel rrrrrrrrrrrrr
anyway, since I have my turbo out,its been kid of squealy latey, sounds like the propeller scraping, I can jiggle it, so I assume the bearings have seen better days. any thoughts on where I can get it rebuilt or get a rebuilt one??? anyone! anyone! |

Try Tim's turbos in Alexandria VA. He's a 1 man band but does good work.
How much end play do you have? Does the impeller move in/out more than a couple of MM? Do you have oil residue in the turbine side of the turbo. On larger Garrett thrust bearing turbos end play can be as much as 3/16 of an inch so a couple of MM should not be bad as long as the compressor does not rub the housing.

Garret 025 Turbos
Welcome to TurboByGarrett.com
NO Bearings! Bushings Only. [Infinitesimal Radial Play allowable,As Close as No Axial Play as you can get.] Call a Garrett Master Distributor in your area: TurboByGarrett.com - Garrett Performance Distributors A rebuild kit is less than $80.00 USD. Some of the Newer Garretts have Roller Bearings! Hoo Boy,If ONLY they made a rebuild kit with those in it! Faster Spool UP...better Longevity. If that "Scraping" noise is either the Turbine or Compressor wheels LOOK at it (Dis-Assembled)before you attempt to Rebuild it. These are VERY TOUGH Turbos,Hundreds of Thousands of Miles in them... IF THE OIL CHANGE FREQUENCY STANDARDS are maintained!

I have accounts with 2 Garrett Master distributors. I think Tim's is still cheaper and better for our 30 YO turbos.
As for something with ceramic roller bearings what are the specifications on these turbos as I'm sure someone makes something with newer guts. Might drop drive pressures some and move more air at lower boost pressures which will lower egt's and improve fuel economy a bit.

If the Turbine or Compressore Wheel are actually rubbing on either of the Housings they should; depending on how badly the reubbed be re-balanced.

thanks for the imput, I can spin them and the dont rub, but high speed I dont know? I dont see any surface that looks like its been rubbing, although I have yet to take it appart, it jiggles a little, up and down, but not back and forth. I really dont want to take appart if it the turbo isnt the noise I hear. When i have the windows down, close to a wall or something I can hear a metal to metal swirling almost squeal, if I increase pressure with the throttle its faster, even a little pressure as not to make the car go faster??? take it apart????

From what's you've said I don't think it's the turbo. I would not take it apart yet. Your more likely to get things to rub with the engine off as there is no oil pressure creating an oil film on the bearing surfaces.
I'd look at your accessories. Alternator or AC compressor to see if they are the problem. I'd give all moving parts in you car a good shake down. Wheel bearings, drive shaft support bearing but I doubt it's them. Something under the hood. Not that I've tried to grab a spinning compressor to find out.
