Info req'd for Poly V-belt tensioner removal

Good evening all.

I have to replace the shock for the Poly V-belt tensioning device on my E300D. I tried to remove the bottom bolt of the shock (part#1), but it is too tight and I'm afraid that I may strip the bolt. There is no room to get a socket on this bolt because the pulley is too close to this bolt.

Is it possible to remove the bearing pin (part# 12) for the tensioner? Is it at all possible to remove the pin without having to remove the fan and other bits and pieces?, and what tool do I need for this?

Thanks,

Rather than remove the tensioner arm bolt which requires sealant on installation, remove The tensioner pulley (item 14, pop the plastic cap then remove the bolt that takes a 6mm hex bit). That will allow you to pivot the tensioner arm to where you have better access to the damper bottom attachment.

I just did this same replacement 2 days ago. I used an open ended 11m, IIRC, with a 14" cheater and a very light pressure. The bolt backs under the WP pulley and is tight, but doable.
Good Luck,

Hi Sixto.

Thanks for the info, but in my case, there is a small protrusion on the engine-block that prevents the tensioner arm from swinging far enough to clear the pulley.

Good Luck,
Thanks for the reply, Gary.

I got the bolt undone, but try as I might, I couldn't get the bolt out far enough to clear the WP pulley. Looks like I have to take it to a workshop.

The last 1/4" of removal, the bolt head is under the WP pulley. No wrench is accessable, only needlefingers. I needed to maneuver the shock dampner to prevent binding.
Good Luck,

Gary
