617 into 123 240D?

What is the effort involved in swapping a 617 into a W123 240D MT? Does a 617 drop right in on does the transmission have to move aft so the mounts align with the frame?

it's pretty simple if you have access to a 300 for parts swap...
lemme know if you need anything!

It's a mental exercise to determine whether it's more work and parts scrounging to convert a 300D to MT or a MT 240D to 5 cylinders. I hear things like Euro tail housings and shortening prop shafts which no shop wants to do. Avoiding such things is worth a few more hours of wrenching to me.

Either way it is a little work.

4 spd in a 300D. have to add the peddles, Manual FW and get it match balanced. clutch disc and pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing. add the manual shifter, shorten the 3 shift rods, shorten the DL and have it balanced.

Use the front DL from a 240 and have it shortened.
Use the trans X mount from a 240 auto.

South Bay DL in San Jose will to the MB DL.

300D engine to a 240D. just have to move the trans back, shorten the DL, add the 240 auto X mount. and add the 300D radiator, oil cooler and expansion tank.

Might want to use a higher gear ratio differential. the 240 uses the 3:69. maybe a 3:07 or a 2:88.

LutzTD has done quite a bit of investigation into prop shaft lengths so contact him for the good part numbers and lengths.

You'll probably need a different transmission mount cross member as well... and then don't forget the final gearing on the diff...

I'd say the tranny conversion is simpler but not by a large margin.

Shortening the driveshaft is inevitable regardless of which way you do it. Maybe you can snag a stock MT 300D one off ebay.de or something. Whats a euro tail housing?

My understanding is that you'll also want a proper flywheel from a Euro 300D if you can get it. That would a little trickier. The Euro MT flywheel would be heavier to account for the extra cylinder. The lighter flywheel of the 240D would make for a conversion with more vibration, etc.

Sincerely,

PE
