Crank, crank, whiiirrr...

It finally starts but it's just a matter of time before it goes out.

New starter? Solenoid?

I just wanted to add that it turns the engine over fast. It just "drops out" too soon.

Sounds like the solenoid is bad, or you have a bad connection. Make sure all your battery, alternator, and starter wires are connected and clean. Also check the battery ground, and chassis ground.

I've seen just the solenoids for sale, but I don't see them for your car in Fastlane, but I didnt' search very hard.

... it could also be a bad ring on the flywheel... broken tooth... loose connection in the ignition switch, on the fender terminal block, at the battery itself... many possible causes...

I found the ground battery post was loose. I can't get it to repeat...

Here's hoping the flywheel is OK. The daughter was driving it for a while and the neighbor commented on how she was hard on the starter

Gotta admit that I was the last one who was driving it any distance...

I had a problem like this for a while. Turned out to be the one way clutch in the starter gear. When I found out the price I pulled it to pieces & took the shine off the friction surface. Worked fine & finally the starter died years later

I went to start it cold. Crank crank whirrr...

It took about 5 cycles before it started in a mighty cloud of diesel goodness

After warming up it started fine a couple of times and I couldn't get it to repeat again...
