300SDL Drivers window problem

When I raise the drivers side window I hear a clicking noise when it gets 1/2 inch from closing completely and stays there. After reviewing multiple old threads I am still confused as to the fix. Is this the plastic slider or do I have another problem. Thanks, Bob

A broken plastic slider will just cause the window to not go up or down but the motor will be working.

I have experienced the folowing on my 300SDL on both front windows. The window motor mechanism is attached to the door frame in three points with bolts and nuts. Mine had caused metal fatigue and cracking in the frame in one of the bolt holes allowing the nut to pull through the sheet metal frame as it flexed near the closed position. This caused a clicking noise like you described and the window would not function properly. I had to take the nut off and put a large washer so it would not pull through the hole in the sheet metal frame.

If you pull the door panel and observe the window moving you can see if this is the problem and the crack is easily visible. The constant flexing of the metal over the years when you raise and lower the window just finally fatigues and breaks out. My driver window went first and the passenger a year or so later.

Why you are there you might replace the slider. It will eventually become brittle and break as well.

Hope this helps..

I have a problem on my 83 300SD now that sounds similar. I found one of the gears in the window lift mechanisim stripped. I bought a used assembly for around $75 but have not had a chance to install it.

Usually clicking type noises from the window mean the gears are stripped. You'll have to pull the door panel and look at the gear on the motor and on the window actuator. It's mostlikely the teeth at the end of the motion when the window it nearly up, that are gone.

It's the window regulator with worn teeth. Usually goes towards one end of the regulator arm which drives the last couple of inches of window position (raised). The clicking noise is the motor gear skiping accross teeth tips (or lack of) on this toothed arm. The mounting brackets also can crack from flexing and messes up the gear /tooth alignment. There are different brands available. Cheaper ones flex more and die quicker. Also remember that the regulator is driver's door specific.
