Water crossover pipe

Hello all, I have an 85' 300td. While trying to diagnose a loud engine knock, I noticed the water crossover pipe is missing. The bolts are in but the small hard line is missing. Was wondering if this matters, would possibly cause a knock, or just a harmless alteration. Any ideas?? Thanks for any help-Art

I've also heard it called a bleed line connection between the cylinder block and head. It's a small horseshoe shaped hardline with banjo bolts at both ends located behind the fan in the front of the engine. Thanks

I might have one of those lines. I'll look when I get home.

The pipe is not needed once the engine is filled with water.
It's only used to bleed the water pump housing during fill up.
If you don't have the pipe, just remove the plug in the water pump housing after fill up to bleed the air out.

While we are on that topic, would it be detrimental to the engine if someone had disconnected and stopped off both heater hose connections? Are they needed to e.g. Allow an air pocket to escape from the head?

All '85 300D/SD did not have that line. Mercedes deleted it for the 1985 model year for some reason.

I don't think it would be a problem.
