Thats weird, I use Rain-X and haven't had a problem with chatter.
I also have a 1.5 year old set of Bosch wiper blades on. I actually noticed that Rain-X helped with the noise. I like to let the water build up a little (in other words I don't have my blades on super high during a slight drizzle) and Rain-X helps by letting me still see clearly between swipes. Course it also helps that I clean the blades and windshield a lot (even if it's just water mixed with that summer windshield washing fluid stuff from MB)

Thanks Peter for the Tip on metal strips. I would have thought otherwise. But your explanation is right.

I cannot believe you guys! Stand back, look at the ANGLE of the wiper resting on the windshield.
I don't care if you have a Chevy Chevette or a Ford Pinto or a Rolls Royce, That wiper arm gets tired! And so does that Angle of the part that you attach that new wiper to. Bend it back straight, then tell me how great that wiper works again! That wiper is setting there in the Hot sun, day after day. It gets used how much in the life-time of the car? Not much. Sun and heat does things to metal. Yes, replacing the wiper arm is always the easiet way, but it is also the most expensive way too. My wife complained her 96 Crown Vic wasn't cleaning winshield right and chattering, I bent the thing straight, works like new! Same Blades! Same Wiper Arm! |

Benz240D beat me to the post. Bending the blade to make the insert perpendicular to the windshield will also reduce or elliminate the chatter. In years past MB actually had a tool that you slipped into the arm in place of the blade. It actually looked like a long stick. With it in place you measured the distance rfom each end to the windshield, and bent the arm until the distances were equal. Mercedes even has a chart that instructs you to map out spots vertically and horizontally on your windshield, and then adjust your squirters to hit those spots. Is that anal or what? I agree with Benz240D; just bend those puppies. I use a small crescent wrench. The info on the spring strips, however, still stands. Put them in with the curve to the window and watch for reduced cleaning action.

I have been having trouble with wiper chatter on my 1982 240D, since I used some Rainex cleaner on the windshield a few months ago. I have washed the winshield with strong soapy water and always pay special attention to sponge the windshield when I wash the car (usually weekly), but there has been no change in the chatter problem.
The windshield was original and had a fairly large crack in the passenger's side, so I had it replaced yesterday. With the new windshield, the chatter problem is gone, and it is wonderful to have a clear view even in the brightest of sunshine.
