It's a market specific relay, with a harness which has a bunch of connections going to the headlight switch and to the battery light (it waits for the battery like to go out to turn on everything)

The part number for the harness is A1265432826 and the relay is A0085456932.

The factory service manual has a page on retrofitting it. Note that this DRL system turns on all the lights, not just the headlights.

DRL wiring

Thanks for the info. I suspected that it would not be simple (and probably not inexpensive, either).

Parts.com prices:
Cable 126 543 28 26 $106.80
Relay 008 545 69 32 $92.40

If you are interested in adding DRLs to your car, using the turn signals is better than the headlights, because the turn signals are designed to be seen by other drivers, whereas the headlights are not.

Ways to implement DRL

True. In fact, I use the "fog lights" (as they are called) as DRL. I rewired my headlight switch (moved one wire) so that the fog lights will come on in the #1 (park) position and changed to clear bulbs. [Turn right one click = park lamps; pull out one click = add fogs.] I have Euro headlamp assemblies with fog lamps that cast a wide, low beam and show up much better from the sides than do the headlights. They're also good for seeing roadside deer in the twilight.

An additional advantage is that I can use the "light horn" to flash the high beams, instantly going from two to four lights up front. Tends to catch the attention of people getting ready to pull out in front of me. Finally, it reduces wear on the headlight bulbs since they're used only at night.

I still have to remember to turn 'em off, but the buzzer helps.

The easy way

If you want lights to be on when the ignition is on and go off when you shut the vehicle off it should be fairly simple to wire in a couple of relays to power the headlights or fog lites. There will be a choice of several hot when ign is on circuits that you can tap into to get coil power for the relay. One of them should be hot when ign is on but not in start. This would be ideal. It should not be necessary to get fancy with this concept. there are a lot of greymarket vehicles here in Canada and they use some variation of this to pass inspection. Cheers Dan

Again, many thanks for all the helpful hints. Most of them are so sensible that I am a bit embarrassed that I didn't think of them myself. But then again --- I can't even remember to turn my headlights off. As for the annoying buzzer, it died a couple of years back. Think I'll implement one of these clever plans rather than repair the buzzer.

My lowly 1980 240D has a buzzer for the headlights when I forget to turn them off.
There is also a buzzer if I leave the key in the ignition.

I also have my reminder monitor...................my wife
