If the plunger is hard to pres the tensioner is working properly.

just be extra extra careful when threading it in the engine, there is a high chance of crossthreading it as the threads are very fine.

Push out the plunger (remove it), install the housing, then push in the plunger and install the cap. Not doing it this way will possibly tension it way too much and destroy the chain and other stuff along the way. I've read horror stories on teh forums because of this.

I've heard about resetting the ratchet on M103 tensioners and cross-theading 603 tensioners. I've never heard of not resetting a 603 tensioner causing a problem. Do you have a link?

IIRC this is not applicable to the engine that the op posted.

I didn't think the 603 tensioner ratcheted at all? The ones I've put into my car didn't seem to, and the FSM has you pump them up in a cup of oil to get all the air bubbles out.
