Tom, Here is a quote from Greg's implication of my lying: "So you have known about this for about 30 years ? You have been a member on the forum ( on and off between temper tantrums ) for TEN YEARS ? Have you seen fit to MENTION this before ?" In his posts he is basically challenging me to come up with written proof, or what I am saying MUST be a lie! This is not the first time he has done this. He started in about 2004 in his pattern of challenging EACH and EVERY point I tried to make and I mean EVERY CONSECUTIVE POST. I've never understood if he was just trying to get under my skin or if I was seen as horning in on his domain, or what. I THOUGHT that after a time out, I could come back to this forum and try to behave myself and not be challenged at every turn, but it just hasn't worked that way. I'm not without fault and I have indeed caused problems on this forum. These kind of implications, however, drive me to the brink. I chimed into this thread because I have empathy for the OP. I have cobbled together lots of engines, trying to put them in usable condition without owing the machine shop my soul. He is not doing a complete tear down and overhaul, he is trying to piece an engine together on a budget and to his credit, doing the best he can to have the greatest chance of success. I have information and lots of personal experience with some alternative approaches that have proved successful and was trying to help him in his somewhat unique situation. I have a lot of engine experience in complete and thorough overhaul according to the FSM AS WELL AS lots of experience cobbling engines together on a tight budget using whatever baling wire and chewing gum I can find. Much of my life was spent with very little money and I can really identify with someone in this situation. THAT is why I was trying to help with some out of the box ideas. I first logged into this forum in January of 2000, looking for some rear axle experience. There was much less information on the net in those days, and help was not generally NEARLY so close at hand. I had an answer from Danny Drummonds (Benzmac) within an hour and knew I had found an internet home. The atmosphere in those days was much the same as my hot rod hangout shops of the sixties with everyone helping everyone and sharing knowledge and skill. The forum maintained that personality for several years. In about 2004 and 2005, the personality changed. MOST of the people on the site kept the original attitude, but a FEW came along that started trying to make a clique and began challenging some of the others, no matter what they said. It's a crying shame that someone like petecooke can't come on here and get quick and friendly help as he would have in the early days. It's also a shame that some of us end up being attacked when trying to help someone like pete.

Speaking as a mechanical engineer I believe I can make the following statement and it will be true for EVERYONE reading this thread. If you have the money and time the best way to do it is to resleeve the block, replace pistons, rings and bearings. With that said, I am glad to see alternatives presented. Don't be narrow minded to people trying stuff to save money. Think where the Cubans would be if they had always had to go by the factory manual with oem parts? They would be tooling around in a lot less American Iron. It would not surprise me if there are some 50's Chebbys running around with 4 cyl diesel engines. Anyway, we had a member join a little while ago only to quit a few days later because he inquired about putting an American V8 in a 108 and got into a pissing match with one of the purist. Anyway, there would be some substantial saving if he were to go that route versus original. The important thing is to always make sure the individual inquiring understands that you are presenting an alternative.

If "that" member has gone because of the comments in his thread I think that that is a shame as it looked like an interesting thread to me - but - we all need to remember this is a forum not facebook! If you want to put stuff on the internet and only get praise then facebook is the place for you - they're always gonna think you're "great" there mate. Here you might get conflicting advice - no matter how angry or irritated the replies may appear - it is up to the OP whether he or she takes the advice given. And if the OP decides not to take someone's advice well hey what does it matter anyway? Chill out.
