speedo broken help

I broke my speedo cable,1987 300d
Once installed i plugged into ins cluster,2x its snapped the cable at the cluster,i drive 1 mile and it cuts the cable.

What could be wrong? anyone?

A similar thing has occurred with the 1984 300D, I attached the cable at the transmission first, then yanked and pulled the cable through the firewall trying to attach to the instrument cluster which created little cuts in the cable itself. The speedo is now acting strange.

I think the proper route is to attach the cable to the instrument cluster FIRST, then to the transmission. Also, wrap the portion of the cable that passes through the firewall in duct tape to protect the cable from being cut as it passes through the firewall.

Thanks for that info,my problem now is i discovered there is a small piece of the cable in the orifice at the trans,it just wont come out.

Talk to Army about the problem. Looks like he knows ZF transmissions every way there is to know them -
