Diesel fuel $0.70 more than unleaded??
Here in Utah we can get unleaded regular for around $3.30/gal. Diesel goes for right around $4/gal. Is the same ratio elsewhere? Why in the world is there such a difference? I long for the good ol days of $.17!!! Yes, I am that old!
|
Today's price at my local station; unl $3.20, diesel $3.64. 13.75% higher in TN but 21.21 higher in Utah?
|
always felt that the main advantage of owning a diesel was the btu available in the diesel fuel was cheaper than that of gasoline. that is not so anymore.
|
Don't know about the rest of the US, but diesel has always been more expense than unleaded (even premium at times)...

Around here its had often been cheaper. But in the past couple years it bounces around. Right now it costs more than premium here at about $3.79 a gallon. Premium is $3.47. |
Yikes! I thought the 34 cent spread ($3.83 vs $4.17) here was harsh. Note to self - forget S350, shop for S320/420.

It's about a 40 cent spread here. Plus has always go down but diesel has been stuck at 3.79 for weeks.
|
Unleaded here is $3.80, and Diesel is $4.20. Been the same for both for weeks. About an 11% spread.
|
I filled up the diesel yesterday @ 3.80. Premium is about the same, and I think RUG is running about 3.60.
|
Tax
Don't know if this is true, but I think I recall at least in CA that diesel is taxed way more than gasoline
|
Its both conspiracy and slightly higher diesel tax. If they artificially keep diesel high, no one will be tempted to buy super efficient diesels (for the most part). I filled my beast 420 with premium a couple days ago at $3.61.....diesel is $3.99 at that same station, lowest diesel is around here currently is about $3.85
Its all a wash, I'm getting 17-18mpg in my 420....all city, and I use the throttle a bit. :D Costs me maybe $3 more a week to commute in it than my diesel, big deal. Come snowfall, its back to diesel power only for me. :D 420 never has and never will see snow... |
diesels have 30% better volumetric efficiency over gassers, so you're still ahead when gas is $3 and diesel is anything less than $4 roughly speaking
|
diesel is abut 4.25-4.40 in LA right now !! cheap gas is about 3.69
|
RUG, 3.45 Premium 3.69, D is 3.79...
|
I recall, many years ago, diesel was always lower than any gas.
Just showing my age I guess. |

I can remember filling my 300SD completely for about $17....when diesel was 94 CENTS a gallon.....

diesel price
In 1968 I bought diesel for my truck in Chicago from a local delivery for .17 a gallon. Just up the street at a service station it was .229. Just across the New Jersey line it also was .229. Where is all that money going at 4.00 a gallon?
|
Amazing spread in diesel in Detroit area
Quote:
RUG goes for anywhere from 3.17/gallon to 3.45/gallon. Diesel is going for 3.55/gallon to 4.29/gallon. I don't understand this spread, it makes no sense, unless gas stations are trying to "enhance" their profits. BP stations are sometimes high, sometimes low, so it doesn't seem to depend on the brand. Maybe the middleman? |
State taxes

Added to both fuels is .15 in "other taxes." Chart in the link shows all the state taxes. Jeff |
Could it depend on supply? There is really only one market for gasoline, the internal combustion engine. Those engines require a lot of fuel, but when compared to diesel, which fuels the other half of the internal combustion engine, plus all the heating fuel, plus all the jet fuels, I think the squeeze is on "fuel" more then gas.
|
RUG is currently $3.09 and diesel #2 is $3.79 in Fort Worth, TX. A few weeks ago the two were about equal in price then gas fell and diesel rose.
|
I understand that ULSD is more expensive than the old diesel to refine, but my opinion about the spread between it and RUG has more to do with public relations/politics than anything else. There are a lot more voices to scream bloody murder about high prices with RUG than there are with diesel. Who cares about wierdos like us and the commercial users.
|
They're cracking diesel to make gas.
|
Here in Austin, RUG is $3.13-$3.17. The cheapest diesel I found was $3.59, otherwise $3.72-$3.78
|
I remember diesel being cheaper than gas too. I filled up in NC this week @ 3.64 gal. Premium gas is about the same as diesel here. Of course I can always head into SC and get a .20 gal break as their fuel tax is lower. I'd always thought that the refining process for diesel was far simpler than for gas. I guess they have evened it up.

I always shake my head in amusement when people tell me they are glad they don't have a diesel and they could care less about the cost of diesel fuel. I tell them the oil companies are laughing at them.....all the way to the bank. My theory is this.... People scream bloody murder when gas prices are high, so the oil companies say "ok, lets lower gas prices a bit to shut them up and raise Diesel prices to make up for it. Ergo, nobody will complain much about Diesel prices. All the while, EVERYONE is now paying for it, as trucking companies pay more for fuel, and they pass on the added cost to the stores. The stores pay more for shipped goods, so they pass on that cost to the consumer. Last time I looked nearly everything in the US is moved at one point or another by truck (diesel truck that is)
Therefore I tell everyone stop *****ing when gas prices go up, you should be raising holy hell when diesel prices go up, because that is going to affect EVERYONE. And since people are quiet about it because "They do not drive a diesel car/truck" the oil companies are laughing all the way to the bank |
I have done something about it. I run WVO and have so for a very long time with no issues. I give the oil companies a big middled finger salute every time I drive my WVO powered MB.
|
Could you explain that??

diesel fuel contains approximately 11% more btu than gasoline, and motor oil[wmo] contains approximately 20% more than gas. that translates to fuel mileage. i run a wmo blend and i can honestly say that the wmo blend i use gives better mileage, gives noticeably more power, and my wife claims it is quieter. the big advantage is my price/gal =<.10/gal [collection and processing cost]. years ago, i bought my 1st diesel because the fuel was cheaper than gas, that is no longer an advantage for owning a diesel, today for me, THE advantage for owning a diesel is you don't have to run diesel.
thanks, hunt |

diesel vs wvo
This is why I changed over to WVO...FREE FUEL, period. The only time I use diesel is in COLD WX..then I mix 20% to 80% WVO...works great..and when I'm sitting at the light, everyone wants to know where the Asian Restaurent is...Happy Motoring !!!
