Actually some solinoids respond poorly to low voltage on the solinoid energising circuit. Read what you are actually getting with the wire hooked up to the small terminal. With weak solinoid circuits sometimes a ford solinoid has to be installed on the fender. Your two second delay means something is going on.

Do all the common heavy ground circuits. Remove and clean and put a dab of grease on then reinstall them. Clean the contact areas as well. Do the battery terminals.

You can loose some voltage over the shakey grounds or poor battery terminals easily. Since the time you got activation of the system by moving the shift lever they have been suspect as well.

Problem Solved!

New starter and another new ignition switch took care of the situation. I appreciate all the advice.

Now, would anyone like to purchase an '88 Silver Eagle Model 20 (Bus) with a Detroit 6v92 and ZF auto trans?

Kevin

I had a similar issue with my 240 d. Which coincidentally is an exact twin to yours. Fixed mine by tightening a loose starter cable.

make an ad in the for sale section, and get some pics in there!
it sounds reasonable for the vehicle.
