Just Bought An '82 240D 4 Speed! Got questions

I have been out of the Mercedes diesel loop for quite some time after selling my '87 300SDL last year. I couldn't stay away from a MB diesel though. The SDL was a very nice ride and had given me almost 100,000 miles of trouble free driving. Someone offered me more than I could refuse so I sold her!!! Shame on me.

Anyway, I just purchased a nice little '82 240D with a manual tranny and I am falling in love again. I got her home and was cleaning her up and decided to degrease the engine. I have done this many times before on these cars with no adverse effects BUT now after getting a few things wet under the hood the A/C blower and compressor will not turm on. Both were working just fine and immediately before I decided to degrease the engine. What device did I get wet that would cause these items to not function now? It has to be that something got wet that doesn't like to be wet. The fuses are good fuses. I replaced them and know that they are good ceramic fuses, new! Just curious.

Thanks!

Kevin

you could have popped the wire off the clutch for the compressor, but I cannot think of something that would kill the blower. likely a coinkidink... possibly, the "spring box" blower resistor box, maybe damaged the wires to it somehow...

i wish it was only a fuse

I have verified that the fuse is good. I think I have an ignition switch problem. If I knew which pin provided power to the compressor and blower I might get it figured out. Thanks!

I doubt the ignition electrical part was disturbed when you washed the engine down. Sure it could be a coincidence but I would make sure it is the issue. My suspicions are it is something else related to your cleaning.

a little more info

The reason I tend to blame the ignition switch is because the previous owner just had it replaced because of a NO START issue. I have verified that the electrical part of the switch has been replaced with a new one. The NO START issue has come back. You can turn the switch and the starter does not respond. I can eventually get the car to start from repeatedly turning the switch. Last night I went out to the garage to investigate the blower issue a little more. I wiggled the ignition switch while turning the blower switch to the high speed position. For a brief moment the blower came to life but now I get nothing. The car still has the intermittent no start problem. Surely the new replacement switch isn't bad? As far as the little box full of coils that mounts on the inside of the right front fender, well, mine doesn't have one. All of my controls are manual. Like I said earlier, the blower worked great before I washed the engine. Oh well.

Tested

No power at fuse #8 (blower and compressor fuse). everything else is working with the switch on. Wipers, radio, signals, lighter all work when the ignition switch is on except the blower and compressor. Still have the intermittent "click" when trying to start the car but the electrical part of the switch is new. I HATE electrical gremilns!

Gremlins!!!! I think you're eventually gonna have to check every connection in the electrical system at some point during the time you own/operate this vehicle.. so, the main grounding connection, the battery leads, the starter connections, the a/c clutch itself. Don't assume that any of this stuff is good circuit until you check it. Why not? Could possibly contribute to the symptoms that you are experiencing and could save you from some potential future problems.. I'm talking about the dark parking lot in December kind.

So far so good!

I am very impressed with this MB. I bought it out of NC, about 90 miles from home. I drove it home then drove it back to NC to get the car I left up there when I bought this MB. I drove it then from NC straight to Charleston, SC yesterday. It has run flawlessly! Our feet got a little chilly before we got to our hotel last night but we didn't freeze. We will drive it back home to Anderson, SC tomorrow morning. I love this automobile. Love it!!!

Might have to rig a temp fused power source for that blower - isolated from the suspect system. It's gwanna get cold and those 240D's are legendary for great heat available to the cabin.

nice! I like that color, my euro 300 4speed is same! I need to paint one of my sets of hubcaps to match though.
