pine needles in my 240d

Just a note for those of you planning to keep your car for a long time. I started working on rust repair on my 240, and loosened the front fender at the bottom to get more room to repair the rusted jack hole. Out came about a 4" high pile of pine needles. Must have been a southern car at some time. However any of our cars can have plenty of dirt in there. I also removed the plastic liner to gain better access to clean it out. Wirebrushed it and put plenty of rust converter behind the fender before putting it back. I do not know if this caused the rust around the jack hole or not, but it would have caused more problems in an area harder to fix if not cleaned out sooner or later.

So, moral of the story clean out behind your fenders.

Definetly a good place to clean every so often. Make sure to clean out the drain holes in the hood hinge area as well as the wells behind the rear wheels.

Pine needles are particularly damaging if they are not cleaned-out. The PO of my wagon let them sit around the radio antennae/window corner and where the bumper meets the rear hatch. In both cases it caused rust. I'm thinking the needles must be pretty acidic.

Is it the needles being acidic or just that they retain moisture in a pile/clump?

Here in Central Florida I have both Oak leaves and Pine needles and it seems like a pile of either on your car is bad.

I've had my share of Pine sap on the paint too! My opinion is try to not park under trees

I have nothing but trees to park under. so just bought a cheap canopy to put over it.

I know oak leaves are acidic, not sure on pine needles, either will hold in water.

I just spent all afternoon "paving" my driveway with pinestraw. We refresh it every year. I worry more about the trees falling than the pinestraw.

IMO that is just a bad design issue from the standpoint of moisture drain off on the part of MB. I saw this exact same problem on my 240, either just from trees or mud kicked up from the tire, the car would build up an enormous pile of debris on the little ledge behind the front fender, and in that space in general.

It would make sense to unbolt those two sheet metal screws that connect the fender into the rocker, and space it out with a couple of washers so water could drain out past the fender. that would do nothing about the inner fender rust ledge, but it would probably do something about rusting out the fender itself
