wanting to install 250d engine in 300tdt, tips please

I have a nice low mile 2.5 non turbo from a 190d, that I want to drop into my '87 tdt. In germany that's all you ever see, the 250td so I know it fits.
my question is if the tranny bolts up or if I should take the (auto trans) one of the 190. Is that the same length or do I need a different drive shaft? can I just use the tdt diff or do I need to take the 190 diff? (if that even fits)

any other issues with this swap?
Not all too worried about computer etc, I know it runs fine without that.

cheers y'all

HDP

It's quite possible that no one in the U.S. has done this swap. If you do it, let us know how it goes.

Your 87 is a W124? If you see the 87 with this engine in Germany, I don`t see why it wouldn`t fit. the mounting holes might just line up. the eng mount arms might be different. really not sure what parts are compatable between the 124 and 201.

You are just going to have to do some measuring.

I only have 123`s, and swapped the 240 4-spd into a 85 300D. that was plug and play more or less, except for cutting and welding the driveline.

Should be some one coming along here that is more helpful.

the transmission should mount up. aside from that, it'll be build your own stuff... 1 cyl short means the driveshaft will be longer on the car... IF they followed the same pattern of engine location from the 61x series...
however, the 124 2.5T's seem to not have this issue... perhaps a driveshaft from one of those cars? heck, I'd go find a wrecked 124 and pull stuff from it.
... I've got one in my yard if you wanna come pull stuff...

awesome!
I was back in Germany all summer and it's just horrible to see all those 40+ mpg w124 250td's for sale. $2000 you got a fine specimen with a 5-speed. so frustrating. Bringing one to the USA is possible, but it's got to be 25 years old to avoid federalisation bullshid. I'll just build one myself. I love my 603, but it's too thirsty.
I bet it's an easy swap. MB is like that, smart.

The 250TD dose not have sls.
Apart from that it should be an easy swap.
I would be getting the trans as well as the change points on the NA motor are likely to be different.

it should not be much difficulty to keep the SLS/PS pump from the original motor.

The driveshaft looks to only be half and inch or so different, most of it is extra space in front of the engine (bigger fan shroud etc). It's otherwise all the same.

A 5-spd manual should bolt up to one? If so they do show up in the yard from time to time. haven`t seen one in a while, just have to keep checking each week.

The 190D 2.5 NA was often manual. Course I'd just grab a 5-speed from any 190, it doesn't need to be diesel.

I thought your 603 turbos had the sls pump on the head.

No. There are euro models with the pump on the head but the head still isn't different, all 601-3 have a space carved out in the head for the old style pump even when the tandem pump is used instead.

ok I never should have posted this. Bad karma...

After driving out to Phoenix my transmission blew!! it won't shift to 4th anymore. well, sometimes it will for a little while and then it's back to 3rd.

unbelievable! the wagon does have 320000 miles on it tho, so the tranny was on borrowed time I guess.

Now I really need one...
