Could you use the clutch disk from the 6 speed and the flywheel and pressure plate from the 4 speed? That seems a lot easier than modifying the input shaft.

I'll show you some pics when the tranny gets here so we can decide the best route to get this through. Speaking of, according to Fedex, the tranny will be delivered to my freight forwarder on 11/17 so I expecto to have it down here by the beginning of December!
BTW, anyone has a W115 intake manifold for sale? As a side note, I bought some drilled/slotted rotors and 4-piston calipers from a R107 560SL. I'll open another thread to share some installarion pics with you. Also, a while back a did an extensive research on suspension spring for the W123 (here). A few weeks ago I came across a set of HD springs that might make my W123 ride like a champ. I'll also share some pics about that. I already got my Bilstein HDs, so as soon as I get a chance I'll tackle that task. More to come into the money pit...

Soon to be installed: Bilstein HD, R107 front discs and 4-piston calipers, HD Suspension springs, wagon front swaybar. |

Glad to see I'm not the only one tempted to drop a 6 speed in a W123...wonder how this got on.
My iron box 4 speed is getting a bit rattly and I'm after taller top gear without making the rest taller too, and the more gears to choose from the merrier. I stumbled across this: 97-03 BMW 540i 6 speed manual transmission e39 - bimmermerchant I count 10 splines on the input shaft and there's one starter bump in the bell housing each side for some reason. So it may marry up perfectly, just with a new adapter plate which has all the right bolt holes. Even a spot for the starter! Gear ratios are (after some googling) 4.23 1st, 2.53 2nd, 1.67 3rd, 1.23 4th, 1.00 5th, and .83 6th And AFAIK the current gearbox is 3.98, 2.29, 1.45, 1. R 3.74 so it'd pretty much be perfect, I could even go for a slightly taller diff and still have stock-ish 1st gear acceleration. And being designed for such a larger engine this gearbox should outlast the car when married to my NA 617. Still have the gearstick and speedometer drive issues, but they're fixable.

I have had the same thoughts and been waiting for this ^^^ exact transmission to show up at my local wrecking yard.
But the issue is the BMW Getrag 420g is not as strong as you think. There is a design issue with the shift mechanism in which it could tear up the 3rd gear syncros over time. Plus Getrag nor BMW offers a rebuild kit for these trannys. So basically, you pick a good used unit and hope it will last or pay a few $$ for a factory rebuilt unit. .

Hmmm good point. I wonder how hard it is to swap the internals over from another used one, as there's cheapish ones on Ebay UK with different bellhousings.

OP's last activity on this forum was in 2014. Unless he checks in or someone still in touch tells him his thread is back alive, it's unlikely we'll ever know.
