87 300TD New - Hello!

Hi All,

1987 300TDT with 240K miles.

Brand new to the board and to Mercedes (my family always had them - but my first). Was looking at the 240 Volvos (owned several Volvos over the years) and came across the w124 wagon - seemed to be about the same risk and expense and ease of work as the 240's but with a little more power and refined driving experience. I got mine pretty cheap (2,700) - which of course means I'll need to put a lot into it. But had good records (oil changes). I've got some unburned fuel issue and some cancer - in fact I'll be posting on the body forum shortly. I'll get some better pictures too...but for now:

welcome to the forum!
I've got two of these babies, and love them to death!
we've got several members here with great details on these 124 diesel wagons, so ask any questions you've got!

Thanks VSTech. I've got to sell another vehicle (anyone need a 1972 Suburban?) and then use the money back into the 300TD. I'll definitely have some questions but don't want to get into it until I've got the money (unburnt fuel, leaky power streering fluid, #14 head (I don't THINK there's an issue there), etc.). Best, TT

unburnt fuel, first thing is to verify the air filter is clean. then look over the exhaust for leaks that keep the turbo from maintaining pressure... then timing and injector dripping etc...

You've come to the right place. I've lurked here for years gleaning information under a couple of different handles. If you need it these guys can locate it for you. I you don't know, learn to use the search function. If you can't find the information you need, ask and ye shall receive.

These guys and their post guided me through a chain replacement on an '85 380SE after it had jumped timing with a valve penetrating a piston. It took me a few months and about $700 to get her up and going again. The estimates I got were $3500 to 4 grand without the quotes covering the piston.

I moved to a 300SD really fast after that. Good luck with the beautiful auto!
