How bad were they? really flattened out I would think. I'll bet there are still 123s running around that have never seen new O rings on that filter stem.

You bet correctly. I don't have any on my current w123s and I don't remember noticing them on my previous Mercedes either (though that doesn't mean much, my memory being what it is these days).

I'm sure the o-rings in my 240 had never been changed when I changed them at over 250k miles.

Wait a minute, don't Mercedes original oil filters come with the o-rings in the box?

This is a dim memory from when I owned my very first SD and bought some parts at the main outlet in Toronto. I seem to remember opening the box and wondering what they were for....

Flattened down flush with the shaft and hard as a rock. Probably original to the car. They didn't even look like O-rings. I chipped them out with a screwdriver tip.

I replaced them because they were cheap and it wasn't really much extra work during a regular oil change. I don't think they're hugely critical.

A few years ago this O ring topic came up and it sounded like it was first time news to many of the members, including me. Everybody rushed out and stocked up, including me.

I've never seen these o-rings with the filters. The all the oil filters I've ever gotten come with the large o-ring for the filter houseing lid and a couple crushwashers.
Maybe a real MB filter from the dealer come with the little o-rings. I've never bought a filter from the stealer.

Exclamation Oil Filter Stem O-rings

This old thread helped me a lot. I had bad o-rings on my filter housing stem. It took too long to build oil pressure after a cold start. That was the first symptom.

After 6000 miles on my oil, I was still checking the level and it was right on the full mark. I was very happy with my engine. Then, one day coming home from work I noticed a momentary drop in oil pressure in a left turn. It made me check my oil again. It was right on the full mark. Then it hit me... The filter housing was empty when I checked it. I have always checked oil level first thing in the morning. When the filter is empty, it has to fill back up before pressure will build. This is where the o-rings are somewhat critical.

I changed the o-rings and the pressure builds immediately and the level is right where it should be.

If it takes ~4 seconds for your oil pressure to build, your stem o-rings may be bad. Make sure your oil level is "over full" if you check it cold like me.

Bingo !!!

AND BE SURE THAT OIL HOLE DOWN THE CENTER OF THAT SHAFT IS OPEN...

it is tiny...and important.... but a length of ' SS safety wire ' will clean it out nicely...

There is a Valve somewhere in the last 1/3rd of the Stem/Tube. I have never tried to take mine a part and have never read on how to take it apart.

Has anyone ever taken the end off and observed and cleaned the Valve?
