Mini diesel truck

Still on the lookout for a diesel engine for my Land Cruiser. Recently came across this little truck - where was it when I was looking for a mini-diesel 6mnths ago?!

Mitsubishi Truck Turbo Diesel

Looks dirty, but it's tempting to buy it and fix it up for running around in... 25-30mpg (if true) is very desirable.

I think they probably were decent little trucks. My mitsu montero is one hellofa nice vehicle for an 87. It is not diesel but probably shares other parts with this truck.

I'm thinking that pickup weighs about half what your LC weights. Wonder how that motor'd do in it?

It wouldn't do well.... I'm not at all contemplating swapping that motor into my LC - it would be crazy. I just came accross this pickup and like the idea of a small truck that can get 30mpgs... wish I had seen it before I got the LC fever...

Had a 1985 Mighty Max pickup for 190k+ miles - most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. 1.9L gas powered straight 4, with a 4 speed manual - got a constant 30mpg out of it.

Timing belts on diesels make me nervous-
I had an Isuzu Trooper "Turbo D" for a while, it was a sweet truck. Short on power, but good on fuel, and decent off road. It also used a timing belt, even though it was a pushrod engine-

Yes they were legally sold in this country. I believe it was also sold under the Dodge name plate, doesn`t mention the year, but probably an 82 or 83. there were not a lot of them sold with the Diesel. use to see a lot of the gassers.

I don`t know the dependability of this engine, but probably as dependable as any of them the Japs installed back then. there was a rash of these little diesel vehicles back in 81 - 84. most low on the power end, but would run a long time is taken care of. just about all of them had a rubber timing belt and needed to be changed about 60K miles. most of them were in ther 60+ hp range. they were also all push rod type engines, don`t believe any were over head cams. they all got way over 30mpg, so what this guy is claiming is probably true.

the only small truck that didn`t have a timing belt is the Nissan SD-22 that is what is in my 82 Datsun PU, was gear driven. The International Scout used the Nissan SD-33 6 cyl engine, and the last yr 80 it was Turboed.

back in that time period, Toyota, Datsun, Isuzu, Mazda, Ford Ranger, Chevy Chevette, Lincoln Mark ? BMW engine, and.......

back in the middle 80`s I knew this older gentleman that had an 83 Mitsubishi 4X, low milage and didn`t drive it much, and clean as a pin. I sure wanted it, then one day he sold it, his house and moved out of state. I use to see this girl drive it around, wonder what happened to it?

a couple sites I found.

Why, why, why doesn't someone start manufacturing that class of truck again? I think they would sell like crazy. I had an '86 pre-Hard Body Nissan that I wish I hadn't ever sold. It was a 5 speed long bed with a gasser 4 cylinder with two spark plugs per cylinder that always got between 30-35 mpg. Bought it for $600, drove it for 3 years and sold it for $600.

I miss the dodge rampage. My dad bought one new, I got it from him with 180k and sold it with 260k It was a great truck that drove like a car and got in the 30s

Someday I find another one and redo it.

If Toyota, Nissan, Mazda did come out with this class of truck it would`t be the simple, basic, plain easy to work on vehicles the were in the 80`s. they would be so over engineered and complicated with Gov, EPA, etc regulations.

Look at where the Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Chevy etc.... all of them went now. huge monsters, as large as a Kenworth. Its all about sales, who has the fastest, most powerful, quickest and most gadgets.

A friend of mine had two of them in the mid-1980's, a 2WD and a 4WD. The 2WD was peppy (80HP), and would easily knock down 40 MPG highway numbers. The 4WD had 15" wheels (as opposed to 14") and was slower and thirstier. Both suffered from his "deferred maintenance", like 30,000 mile oil changes. They also rusted profusely, worse than an old Chevy Blazer. Five or six years ago he sold both of them- for $1500. You could have made one truck from the two.

IMO, there is definitely a market for this today. Too bad the Mahindra flamed out.

Well, I know I'm waiting for it. But if anyone is interested the US is supposed to get a four pot Cummins Tacoma diesel this next year.

I know I know I know... it's a modern vehicle and will contain everything under the sun controlled by a central ECU. But it's a Tacoma Diesel!

A year or so ago, Mahindra announced that they would be selling a diesel pickup in the US. It has not materialized yet. I don't know if it is still in the works or not.
