Gummed up turbo - not a Benz

A friend in France has a VW Transporter 2.5 Turbo Diesel van and has had it from new - Approximately 5 years and 50k miles. It runs on regular pump diesel, but has suffered from intermittent boost failure under load for over a year; the reason turned out to be a broken sensor and a gummed up / sutted up variable vane in the turbo. The turbo was cleaned with a kit from ebay that smelled like oven cleaner (apparently), but seemed to clean the turbo after an hour and it runs properly now.
Is this something that affects all modern turbo diesels or was it just that van?

VW suffers with EGR gumming the turbo.solution unhook egr and vent to ground.

Major wastegate problems were endemic on the tdi for at least a few years. . Best caught under warranty. Only cure was basically a new turbo. Volkswagon went from a fault free turbo basically to one with a pretty high failure rate.

I know nothing about volkswagons 2.5 turbo though but it sounds simular. The common failure was constant overboost with a protection circuit restricting engine output. I have lost track of the newer volkswagon products even.

Not impressed with their engineering or less so as time goes forward. Perhaps better stated I feel the newer the better chance of them being problamatic.

In this day and age if they still cannot even build a sound automatic transmission they should source someone elses. They have dropped the ball seriously in many ways from my perspective. They have used technology that may have enabled 75 miles a gallon. Instead upping torque and power well beyond their common gas cars.

I no longer really trust either the direction or intent of this company in north america. Even though my wife wants another tdi we may buy. It will be a standard if we do and when the maximum extended warranty on a new car is near the end the car goes. With some of the newer gas car approaching their fuel milage either they get down to business or the car diesel sales will suffer.

Thankyou.
It seems to be a known issue with the VW VNT turbo 2.5D.
