Nooo!!! Ever miss a deal on a low-milage diesel? Why are Craiglisters such jerks?

I don't get it. I've sold things on craigslist before... even sold a couple cars on there! EVERY TIME someone calls me and sounds serious about buying something from me (including setting up a day and time to meet!!) I make sure to notify them FIRST if I get a better offer so they have a chance to compete. It's only fair, right? But, for some unholy reason, most of the people I try to buy things from on craigslist feel like it's OK to sell things out from under me, without providing notification. I mean sure, it's a free country but JEEZ! At least have some common courtesy, huh!?

The seller (in San Antonio. I'm in Houston but we were going to meet up tomorrow) posted his '83 (or '84, I forget which) 300D with 120k miles on it in beautiful shape for just $1800 OBO. Needless to say it sold in less than 24 hours... and not to me. The seller was some kid who inherited the car from his uncle and after 2 months of driving it didn't want it because it was a "grandpa car". Lame. So very lame. Then again maybe he abused it for 2 months... oh well. I'm just dying to own another 300D (better yet a 300TD... I miss my wagon!) and this seemed like a great opportunity. My '90 300SE is a GAS GUZZLER and I want to get off of it.

20MPG in your 300SE vs 25 in a 300D, with fuel prices 50 cents or more higher on the diesel...plus the cost of tagging, insuring, maintaining multiple cars.

Just say you want another one. Don't try and justify it.

Yeah, that's my philosophy. Also why I had 4 diesels at one time.

So what is the whole story? when were you supposed to be there? When did or didn't he call?

After selling multiple cars and bikes on craigslist and in the local paper, I have learned the hard way. You have someone set up to come buy the car and in the meantime you turn away several other people because you are holding the car. Only to have the original person NEVER SHOW.

When I sell a vehicle it is the first person that comes with the cash.

No, I get that aspect of it for sure. He told me he was busy until Monday, which is when I scheduled a meeting. Lo and behold he sells it today...

For some insane reason I'm getting closer to 10-11 MPG in my 300SE. I think EPA rates it at 16 on the highway, so I guess that's accurate for the model. Plus my 10 mile commute has 23 stop lights on it, which doesn't help. Anyway, this is my first gasser and I just overall prefer the diesel... but you're right about the price. I remember when I first got my 300TD several years ago diesel was about the price of premium or less. I can't believe they charge so much for diesel these days. Doesn't it require less refining than gasoline? Is it because it's "ultra low sulfur" or whatever?

Something is wrong with your car. That car should get right around 20 mpg no matter where you drive it. The best I ever had my 300se going was about 23ish mpg.

City is more like 18 give or take

The ones I hate are the ones where I see the ad with an OK price, contact them, and then get told they've added another $1000 to the price "because there's a lot of interest."

Also, 99% of the time when I email someone about an ad they never respond.

craigslist is free, that means anybody can use it,criminals, drug pushers, people that dont read books and vote against thier interest and only at presidential elections, etc.just like a free concert, you might have a good time but you have to elbow your way past the idiots. when you pay a fair mount for something you want the experience is usually pleasant. As always the RICH win......

Wait, really!? Doh!

I assumed that was the norm since fueleconomy.gov shows 15/17 mileage for it. The car only uses a little bit of oil and runs very smooth. I never noticed any odors (excess gas, burning oil, etc) so I assumed everything was tip-top. I wonder what the culprit could be? A thirsty gremlin in my tank is my guess thus far...
