Unhappy Need help car making a ticking sound!

My car 1985 300SD 300K

Ticking noise coming from the area around spin on fuel fliter. Only occurs when the key is turned to the glow plug position. Car starts easily and runs fine. Can't hear the noise after car started. Just got back from a 600 mile round trip and car ran fine. Anyone have any ideas of the cause of the ticking noise? Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

... sounds like it's in the glow plug relay. pull the glow harness off the relay and see if the ticking continues. then unhook the control harness and see if it does, then just start listening to the car with a broom handle for the origin of the noise.

Cruise control actuator can tick. Put your hand on it and see if you can feel it.

My cruise has never worked since I've owned it. Would it start giving me problems like this now?

Mine doesn't work either but if it's turned on it will tick.

Can you tell me where the glow plug relay and harness are located?
Thanks

I'll also try to turn it off, I guess I could have turned it on by accident.

Thanks

Just follow the electrical connections that are attached to the glow plugs. You'll find the relay in a short time. It is typically a moderate sized black box.

Put your hand on the actuator first to see if that is where the sound is coming from.

Well I went out to troubleshoot the car and now it is not doing it anymore. Anything I should check or be concerned about? Or do I just wait until it does it again?

Smile

The noise started again and I pinpointed it to the VDO cruise control box above the spin on fuel filter. Pulled the box's power supply cord and problem solved. Thanks to everyone for the help.
