Strange temp reading from the guage

Hi all,

Posting for my friend who has 94 606. He called me over to have a look at his car as he said it was overheating, so I too it for a drive.

From cold it got its temp up normally on the temp guage, but then passed 80C and beyond. The guage kept creaping up and up past 110C so I shut it off and open the bonnet to take a look.

The thing is, it just wasn't showing any signs it was actally running hot,no typical smell that goes with an overheating engine, no extra coolant rushed into expansion, no loss of power. I started it up again and it went straight up to 120C and more, the needle was reading off the guage.
Turned it off again to take one more look and then re-started it again (within one minute or so) but after re-starting it was reading 40C.
What is with that?

If it was a failing t'stat or water pump, then I wouldn't be able to get a 40C showing on the guage right?

anytime I get goofy readings from an electrical instrument I suspect grounding of the instrument.

Take engine and radiator temperatures with a non-contact thermometer to confirm the gauge

yuup. sounds like a bad temp sender to me. of course, it's a late w124, so bad wiring harness could easily cause the issue...

I am in the process of adapting 123 temp & oil gauges into my 124's cluster. Sick of electronic problems with the temp gauge. It shows the correct temp 75% of the time & then just jumps to full scale for the remainder. Reliable gauges are a must.

Yes, I think it is time to invest in an infrared thermometer. I purchased one back in 2005 but returned it to the shop because I was getting different readings when shooting it at a stationary object. But they have probably improved since then.

This could be the case, as it hasn't been done yet and some of the insulation is missing from the loom in places.

I'm afraid to tell him of the cost for a new loom. With the exception of the manifold, it is a pretty straight forward job.
