1997 E300 STRANGE STARTING PROBLEM
First, HAPPY THANKSGIVING to ALL..... My car has shown no symptoms but, today my wife went to start it after leaving church and it would not start. I attempted to crank it and it gave a sound like a loose battery terminal. Checked terminals tight and clean . I attempted to jump it with my diesel excursion but it gave the same sound and would not start. The voltage was 11.96 V before jumping and with jumper cables attached and excursion running voltage was the same. Excursion voltage with engine running and cables attached at battery was 14.2V. The windows would not go up after disconnecting jumper had to reattach to accomplish this. Took the battery home and retested BEFORE charging voltage at 12.3v. Took battery to Walmart for testing and it tested fine. Any ideas while I charge it before putting it back in and trying again. Could it be bad ground somewhere? or K40 relay?

Update, charged battery to 12.56 put it back in and it gave a slow crank sound then stopped. Checked voltage and it was now at 11.96 V. Decided to jump it and IT STARTED. Brought it home its sitting in driveway running volt meter showing 13.7V. Now could it still be bad battery and mechanic at walmart does not know how to use his tester??. Not K40 ...Now what???

if the battery was 12.56 AFTER you charged it AFTER wallmart "tested" it, then no, they do not know how to test a battery... it has to be fully charged to get a good reading from the battery tester. fully charged is 13V float, or 12.75V after surface charge is drained... your battery is bad, or it's STILL not fully charged.
what battery do you have? what jumper cables? the excursion should certainly have the battery power to start your car, unless the battery is SOOO bad it won't let the voltage climb to start level, or the jumper cables you are using are total junk.

VSTECH, sorry for the misunderstanding but I did not charge the battery before taking it to Walmart the voltage was 12.3 when I took it there...The battery is an Autocraft Titanium from Advanced Auto that I bought with the car it has the date stamp on it which, is dated 8/08. The jumper cables are those super heavy duty used to start diesel trucks. The battery was charged this am and ending voltage was 13.65. This however dropped to 12.75 and stayed there after an hour and before starting car. My wife did leave with it and hopefully I dont have to go get her.

yeah, I got that you didn't charge it before the trip to walmart. but THEY have to charge a battery before it can be tested.
it's a good thing the battery is holding a 12.75 charge! so it's a good battery. any idea why it got a low charge?
