I own a '86 5 speed manual diesel Passat. My daughter drives it while she is in college. It is approaching 250,000. My total repairs in all that time is a serpentine belt tensioner and front struts. This does not include wear items...brakes, tires , timing belt and such. It averages 41 MPG. Paint is a little dull and the cloth seats are a little dirty but it runs like new.

When you can buy a nearly mint older car for 9x less than a "middle of the road" new car (30k being that, if not below), why.

I like knowing that when I pull into my garage with my latest vehicle acquisition, it is paid for already.

Only one of those two has a throttle pedal which causes an instant reaction to the engine when driver input changes

Though it might be fixable with software on the TDI... but I don't like the programming in the CR's drive by wire at all.

The TDI will have a lot more headroom than the W124.

This is back in the time they were really producing a durable and affordable serviceable car. One I could not kill over the years and just got tired of driving it eventually was a 1985 model jetta diesel.
