Hmmm.
I'm in the process of swapping in an engine from an 83 into an 85... should I keep the 85's IP in the system for the "computer"? I already know I need the trans plate for the tach to work...

The short answer is no. The computer on the 85 is an idiot, operation of EGR only. Tach signal does run through that "computer" in the pass side kick panel. Tack signal is picked up from the front damper pulley. It will all work OK if the 83 had a three wire tack like the 85 does. That is about where they changed from the two wire to three wire. If the 83 was a good runner with its current pump, leave it alone. If not, now would be a good time to change it, while they are out of the cars. Remember, re-install and re-timing, is not for the faint of heart.

on the 85, the front damper pulley is for dealer diagnostics only. it has no relation to the tach...
I'm just wondering if not having the IP's rack position sensor hooked up will harm anything. it sounds like it won't.
good, because it's a low mileage, zero stretch on the chain, motor that runs excellent, and I really didn't wanna mess with it at all.

please if anyone has any contrary advice, I'm all ears.
thanks!

Actually for the '85 model year, tach signal is picked up from the flywheel.

As stated the Rack position sensor feeds data for the EGR along with ARV function. Doesn't effect A/C, Kilma and tach operations

Are we doing a quote of the year competition?

If so I think this should be a contender!

I was told at one time that the rack sensor did effect the Klima--causing it to cut out the AC under certain load conditions to more power could go to the drive wheels. Is that not correct?

I was under the impression that the switch on the valve cover cut out the a/c... I do not know anything about the rack sensor.

Yes it's the switch on the valve cover that detects throttle linkage movement and signals the Kilma to cut off the A/C at a point. It's not dependent on load, just linkage movement.
