Another Tranny leak
My 95 E300 Diesel tranny started leaking, I was planning on doing a fluid change and have everything. The leak is on drivers side, it looks to be comming from where the gear selector goes into goes into tranny.
Is there an O ring or gasket & can it be replaced without pulling tranny. I have everything on hand to do tranny service except for gasket or o ring. Or do I need a whole new selector?

Do you happen to know if you have a 722.6?
I'm guessing so. Have a look at this PDF file for an exploded parts diagram. http://www.ganzeboom.net/images1/ganzeboom/parts/Mercedes/722.6.pdf

Thanks for link. Looks like part # 72. Now if I take linkage off,can that be replaced with out removing tranny. Or if I take driveshaft off and drop tranny by removing rear mount will I have enuff room to replace?

I've never even seen your transmission before but I can say that the linkage goes to the control valve 741M-1 in the PDF.
It looks to me that for your transmission you might get some joy by removing the oil pan, the valve body and the connection from 741M-1 to the input shaft. You then would need to remove the input shaft to get access to the seal. Access around the gearbox is usually tight. Like you say you might be able to drop it down a bit if you remove the propshaft - but be careful if you do not to damage the mounts. Leaving heavy things dangling at an angle can damage stuff!

Good luck with it - it looks like you are a pioneer for this one. If you can take some pictures / report back I'm sure I'll thank you in about 20 years when I own a car with a 722.6!
You might get away with just disconnecting 741M-1 and not removing the valve body - see how you get on.

If I have to pull the tranny it won't be the first, but I have only replaced them. I hate to replace it for a 55 cent seal. Part is on its way . I'll post a follow up.

I was able to replace this seal without removing driveshaft or tranny.. Remove neutral saftey switch. . Drop pan, remove filter, Remove allen head screw that retains gear selector shaft ( must use shifter to be able to shift and gain acess to screw). Then remove shift linkage and pull selector shaft out. Remove old seal. Take a 1 1/2" 3/8 bolt with a heavey washer next to head , put new seal on bolt, tapered edge towards inside and start seal in hole . Once threads are inside tranny put a nut on and tighten bolt to PULL seal in. There's a few things I left out but thats was the Jist of it. Warning: Order 2 seals. In case you screw one up. Also towards rear of car there is a quarter size disk on the same side as shaft selector that also could leak fluid. If it's leaking tranny must be removed from car.

No pics. BTW It's not as intimidating as it seems. In reality The linkage does not go all the way into the valve body.
