617 Powered toyota 4runner

I saw this ad and must say as a first generation 4runner owner enthusiast this would be a great off road machine. I am not sure what the weight penalty would be but the HP, torque and MPG gain would be worth it. Might be even better to do in a Gen 2 since they are mostly dogged by the crappy 3.0 V6.

That is a tempting vehicle. The video is not very good since it only shows the vehicle doing what any 4Runner can do. He needs pictures of the conversion in process and the various parts he adds and subtracts fro the vehicle. Nonetheless, the conversion is appealing. I'd want the 4 door version myself.

How do they get away with a diesel conversion under CA emission laws?

Agreed, plus the 2nd generation 4runners with 4 doors go for less money in most cases than the gen 1.

I think you can get swaps referreed in if it's an engine from the same or later model year, and all the emissions equipment is carried over.

An '86 also might be old enough to be smog exempt now; I don't know the current rule in California, but here in Washington it's 25 years.

Anyone notice that in the video it's a 135hp claim?

... I thought it was a typo... 125 in the 617a's maybe it's been tweaked?

Another question would be is it truly a 4x4 powered or just an engine and trannie swap from a junkyard bolted to the drive shaft.Seeing the video were it races up the sand embankment gives some clue to the story. No engineering just rewiring and bolting new engine and trannie mounts with lines for fuel and gauges for the engine.Im guessing $10,000. is what their asking for these ,especially in california were people spend money like water.

I've seen several of these converstions mantaining the manual Toyota drive train from the flywheel back. They drill out the toy flywheel to bolt to the MB crank and use a 3/8" piece of steel as a homemade adaptor bolting the OM617 to the toy transmission. Same thing with Jeeps as toyota and jeep shared the AX-15 trans for a few years. There's a guy out there selling pre-cut adaptors for the AX-15 for reasonable. Finding a 2nd gen toy 4runner with a manual might not be easy. They actually fit easier in the Jeeps since they came with the straight 6 so there is plenty of room for the straight 5. With the V-6, there are some issues with fitment up front and maintaining a/c. The front oil sump is a bit of a challenge for either without significant lift.

Most likely a 4x4labs conversion. Not super expensive, but you'll have to do some fabbing yourself. I've got the parts on shelves to put a 617 in my FJ40.

OM617 to Toyota 5 speed | 4×4 Labs

The thing that concerns me most is that, since 4x4 labs just came out with the adapter plate for this setup within the last 18 months or so, why sell it so soon? Does it suck or are they just trying to get out from under a pile of debt?

I'm not following you. It appears they are selling their adaptors for you to perform your own repower?

I mean that they might find the finished product disagreeable, regardless of who is responsible for the workmanship. Sometimes you're not so happy once you get what you wish for.

The stuff 4x4labs sells is top quality. I haven't heard of anyone having anything negative to say about those kits.

1985300sd conversion

Am I reading that you can take a 6cylinder jeep and instal a 5cylinder mercedes motor and use an adapter plate to bolt up to the jeep transmission? I have a good motor that I could take out of my 1985soosd. The transmission quit working so I just parked the car. Has some one on this forum done this? Comments and suggestions welcome. Thanks

Mercedes OM617 5 cyl Turbo Diesel engine swap to Jeep Wrangler YJ conversion - Diesel Bombers

That's right, there are several examples of Wranglers, XJ's, and MJ's where the stock 5-speed AX-15 drive train was retained repowered with an OM617 bolted in place of the 4.0 liter gaser. The guy in the above link sells adaptors if your interested (I have no relationship with him or his work).

Several other folks have made their own adaptors to mate the OM617 to the AX-15 and several other transmissions both manual and automatic. Mr. Google with provide you days of reading on the topic.
