300SD beeping with door open and lights OFF

My 83 300SD beeps when the door is open AT ALL TIMES, whether the headlights are on OR OFF..... Normally it just goes on when the lights are on (like my 2 other 300SD's and my 300TD), but the beeping always being on makes it hard to know whether I've left my headlights on during the day (since I can't really tell).

I've tried looking around, googling, looking the service manual and I can't seem to figure out where to even look, since I don't know how to phrase this with the appropriate jargon. When I press the push-button thingy that's on the door frame (as if the door were shutting), then the beeping shuts off, whether the headlights are on or not. What is that push-button thingy called? What is the feature called when the car beeps with the lights on?

The push-button thingy only has two connectors, so I'm guessing it just closes/opens the circuit, so whatever is going wrong is elsewhere.

Also, I have TWO push-button thingies, and the 2nd one seems to not have any effect. What's that for anyway?

The reminder should sound anytime the door is open and the key is in the ignition and/or the headlights are left on, with the motor off.

Are you saying it is buzzing with the door open and no key in the ignition?

Keys aren't in ignition. The door is just open. Lights are off. It beeps. I have no way of knowing if I've left my lights on (esp. during the day when the dash panel isn't noticeable).

If I turn the car on, and keep the door open, then the beeping stops. Shouldn't it stay on until the door is shut? Seems odd that it wouldn't be screaming at me if I could be driving away with the door wide open.

Something I've read says there may be a faulty buzzer behind the dash panel..... I do have a spare 300SD that worked fine I could pull it off of. Maybe someone can verify that this might be the cause? if it's not reading the signals right and still buzzing. Just not sure if there's anything else involved.

This is bringing back a very old and dim memory.

Check your fuses carefully for any that are blown or have heavily corroded holders.

Just under the hood, right? Or are there other fuses scattered inside, ie under the dash panel, etc....

A 1983 300Sd shouldnt produce a beeping sound, if so its aftermarket. It only has a warning buzzer.

Under the hood.

I seem to remember being in this situation, wondering what the hell was going on, then noticing (memory may be off here) that my reversing lights weren't working. When I replaced the fuse the buzzer was silent....

Like I said, however, this was 12 years and one MVA-related concussion ago, so my memory isn't always what it ought to be

All my MBZ works the same way.

Buzzer on when ( light on or key-in-ignition ) and door is opened. I suspect you may have a problem in the 'key-in-ignition' circuit, i.e. the car thinks the key is in the ignition.

x2

also, on the part with the car running with the door open, once the key is turned to the #2 detent, the warning only sounds for a short time to alert you to put on your seat belt, then goes silent... MB engineers must have figured you'd close the door on your own...

Try unplugging the key buzzer switch connector at the ign lock assembly. (If the switch has round connector pins it's a euro switch which works opposite of the US version. The US switch has flat spade connectors.) If it stops buzzing does your steering wheel lock when the key is out? If not that's the problem. The steering wheel lock pin has to release to turn off the warning switch. You should be able to hear a distinct metallic "clunk" when you remove the key. If the steering does lock, and the buzzer is off when unplugged see the post below.
If it keeps buzzing with the switch disconnected, it's not the key warning buzzer, look at the headlight & seat belt circuits.

Key warning buzzer switch
