300 SD fuel leak

Hello all,

I ran out of gas on my way to work this past tuesday (what a pain). I added more fuel, and used the hand primer pump under the hood and it started right up. I put about a half a tank in and drove the next two days. Yesterday, however, it happened again. I put about a gallon of fuel in, and went to use the hand pump, but it was loose. I screwed it back in, and tried to pump it but there was no pressure. I was unable to start it that night and got a ride home with a friend. At home, I saw a massive patch of what i believe is diesel fuel in my driveway. Could the primer pump be the source of the leak? Any suggestions as to how I may be able to patch it up? Thanks so much for the help!

Possible, replace the primer pump and see what happens.

I could be wrong but... you want the pump to be loose when priming, after achieving prime pressure, you want to screw the pump back in so it's not loose.

There is a solution for that..............

Fill with fuel.............drive not more than 425 miles.

Refill with fuel.

My gauge is flakey too. Fuel sending unit or something, caused me to run dry at least once. Now I just need to remember that the guage will not go below about 1/16 of a tank, that = E.

Remove the sending unit from the top of the tank via the storage compartment in the rear shelf.

Carefully disassemble the sending unit (don't disturb the wires that come out of the can). Clean it thoroughly with brake cleaner spray. Reassemble and reinstall.

Done.

yeah, keeping a functioning fuel gauge is important. you may have lost a injector return line, or one of the many rubber hoses may have started leaking, the primer pump certainly can dump some fuel. most would notice the smell though. how dry is your engine compartment?

I assume your talking to the OP but I'll chime in anyways; my engine compartment is not exactly clean. My car marks it's territory. My eyes lead me to the turbo drain tube as the biggest culprit. Injectors into block seem good and clean though. Ever since I became aware of the 'overdrive' button beneath the accelerator, my blowby mess on the oil cap has doubled. Doh!
