83 300D air in the diesel filter
My 1983 300d will run out of fuel well before the tank empties. I can see air entering system when it still has several gallons in tank. I removed the line at bottom of tank and did not see any problem. has anyone had this experience?

Sounds like someone reversed lines.Try reversing inlet and outlet lines. It might have been done as tank screen was clogged.

But how are you measuring the amount of fuel left in the tank? Are you using the gauge?

there is at least 5 gallons of fuel in the tank when it begins to act up. I find 3 lines on tank. One comes out the bottom and the other 2 go in the front of the tank and they are different sizes---hard to mix them up--any help is really appreciated.

Listen the lines under the tank are,a breather, return line, and to engine line.Open the hood and see if cigar hose is attached to top line.If not reverse the cigar to the top.
If it still does not work, your tank screen may be clogged, and needs clean with a tooth brush.

Are you sure you actually have fuel in the tank? Sometimes the float in the fuel level sensor seizes in a position that makes you believe you have fuel when there is actually none.

There is also a possibility as the fuel level lowers in the tank. Gravity pressure falls off enough that air is sucked in somewhere. This if getting the lines checked for correct orientation does not do it.

Are you talking about the main filter or the pre filter?
