240D where is PS fluid check?

83 240D--I can't find where to check the ps fluid...there is a metal cylinder above my ac compressor. It has a wing nut on it. Is that it? Can't find anything else that it could be. Don't know if it matters but it's manual transmission. Thanks!

Remove the thumbwheel on top of the reservoir and remove the cap. The level should be pretty close to the top of the white plastic center post.

If the fluid is black, you should purchase a new filter and four quarts of power steering fluid. Remove the fluid from the reservoir, remove and lower the return hose into a drain pan. Plug the return hose fitting and open two cans of power steering fluid. Have an assistant start the motor and turn the steering wheel lock to lock while you keep pouring the P/S fluid into the reservoir. When you're out of fluid signal the assistant to shut it off.

Replace the filter and reconnect the return line. Fill the reservoir and have the assistant repeat their process turning the wheel back and forth until noise is gone and reservoir is full. Replace cap.

The center post has a horizontal metal triangle piece on it & that seems to be where the fluid mark is on the side of the canister. Most likely the high level mark?

For future reference which is the return hose? The one that is higher or lower on the canister? Fluid is still red and I don't see where a filter would go. Does that become obvious when the fluid is drained?

If everything has been fine & now there seems to be some sort of fluid that has spewed all over everything, and the fluid level is now just above the highest of the 2 hoses, and it's making a noise like the power steering fluid is low, what's your best guess? Hose? Gasket? Pump? Something else? The fluid is spewed from under the canister somewhere.

Saw the fluid about 2 weeks ago but couldn't pinpoint it. Checked the oil and coolant EVERY time I drove it and then it started w/ the ps noise.

yes

Put it to the correct level and start the car. Have someone turn the steering wheel from side to side while you are looking around under the hood to see if you can see a leak.

The power steering pump seal was leaking on my E300 (285k miles) and I refilled it with some of the power steering fluid with leak stop and it is now a real slow leak. I've got a spare pump that I will eventually swap out.

Thank you! I filled it & had someone turning the wheel to lock while running & it doesn't seem to be leaking from anywhere(that I can tell so far). I'll keep checking it though.

Thanks for the info on the return hose. Hope that helps someone else down the line b/c I searched for that info and couldn't find it anywhere!

Great info for draining & replacing filter.

Happy Holidays!!!
