Seriously now...

I've been thinking about this since it happened and it's really been irritating me.

Whoever owns the Navy w123 300D with a tan interior who broke down in the right lane near the intersection of Norbeck Rd and Avery Rd on Monday morning... I won't call you a jerk but you sure are inconsiderate.

I don't know what caused the breakdown, whether it was an engine issue, a non-functioning alternator or what. But to leave a car with the hood up in the right lane of traffic with NO 4 ways or without any kind warning device is just irresponsible.

Two cars in front of me almost rear-ended you, so I pulled around after them. I noticed no one was in the car and the hood was up, so I threw a few flares down, looked under the hood a bit, but couldn't stick around as I had an appointment I couldn't miss.

So not only to you, but a request to all drivers on this board. CARRY WARNING EQUIPMENT. Four-ways won't cut it when your battery is dead. It doesn't have to be a MB triangle, or road flares but there are hundreds of roadside reflective devices on the market.

Thank you.

I've been the lucky first-guy-on-scene at 4 accidents in the pas month. So after the second I ran out of the 4 flares that I kept in my trunk (I dropped one of the four to aid another disabled motorist).

Not being able to find a decent set of 30 min road flares online that didn't cost and arm and a leg (+ mandatory $25 fee for shipping HazMat) I went to the police department. I asked several officers and the desk officer if there was a fire/police supply they frequented in the area, no luck. So on my way out to my car I talked to another officer about my search for flares, he walked to his car opened his trunk and asked "how many do you need?" I asked for four and he handed me twenty. Then gave me his name and told me to look him up if I ran out.

So I guess MCPD is good for something.... every once in awhile..

It was a 300D, I wondered if the owner was a board member. We might be able to diagnose the problem here.

Additionally if I posted in the "open forum", not everyone frequents that subforum.

I had an incident with my trusty old Saturn coupe the night before Thanksgiving with an incredibly deep puddle on a highway entrance ramp that hydrolocked my engine. The water also left me with a gimpy electrical system, and non-functional rear hazard lights on a dark curve where people are mostly concerned about the traffic they have to merge with coming up behind them on their left, and not some car on the narrow shoulder to their right. I really did wish that I had some flares to put out to help mark not only me, but the killer puddle.

It's been a while since I was in a truck stop, but I recall very clearly that one I used to fuel up at regularly sold flares. It might be worth stopping in and taking a look the next time I am near a large truck stop. Seems like a good idea, right?

It sounds like Martureo feels all MB owners are here on the forum. We wish they were but that is not the case. I suspect we don't even represent one out of a hundred MB owners.

I would not make such a foolish assumption. There are several members of this board in my area that I have never met nor spoken to online. I have posted this on at least one other board and I know full well that I'm not likely to reach the owner in question.

Mostly I'm trying to motivate people to carry warning equipment in their vehicles.

it's highly unlikely ANY of the fine members would so mistreat their car this way...
I've seen several MB diesels left abandoned on the side of the road/highway... usually with the windows down, in the rain...

Fred Meyer (a big box store) carries them out here, in the automotive section. I've also seen them at auto parts stores. They're usually only 15 minute flares, though. I carry three or four in my trunk.

There are also electronic versions you can get now. They're longer-lasting and reusable; on the other hand you can't use them to start a campfire.

I called another buddy of mine (a cop) and he told me that most officers would be willing to hand out flares if they knew you were dropping them at accident sites. So good tip, I'd ask around. Especially since free is cheaper than any store.

The electronic flares are from $10-55 each. Home Depot had them for sale for $7.99 each for Xmas. The stronger models that Police have started using (to avoid the fire risks) are around $45 a piece.
