Floor jack oil

My floor jack just developed a leak. After consulting a search engine, I should be able to get away with ATF. Or, would it be a good idea to get the specific stuff?

Question, what failed to cause the leak? Would simply topping off the reservoir result in that leaking out at the same place? I imagine, but would like input.

This is a Sears, made in China, unit almost 20 years old.

more then likely the o ring on the pump shaft. any light oil should be fine. Hydrualic oil is the prefered oil.

It's 19 years too late for that.

Most dino oil might attack seals or swell them. Atomatic transmission fluid will not. It would be nice if it said craftsman on the label as mentioned.

If the label would jack up a car, it would be worth something. But it won't, and it isn't.

I'll check around tomorrow, I have ATF on hand.

No Craftsman on the label, just Sears.

If the "O" ring leaks again, not sure how to get to it.

Agreed, but I'd probably go to a better auto parts store and buy their jack oil, and call it a day. Right size portion to do the job.

But finding the cause of the leak is the key priority.

My Father gave me a large leaky Floor Jack that I did not know leaked until I used it.

I filled the jack (using a meat syringe) with Differential Oil; and used it.

Try to pull the top cover off (where the Sears emblem is) and there should be a fill port located there.
I have a similiar unit and replaced it with a 3T Harbor Freight unit and THEN found the fill port.

Hmmmm, I thought the screw on the left by the handle was the fill port. I'll look into it further.

Thanks everyone.

I'm glad you are using jack oil. I don't know for sure but I thought that the cleaning properties of ATF (often used instead of that marvelous misery oil for unsticking piston rings) might make things worse for you...
