Rear caliper brands
I have a 1980 300TD that's in need of rear brake work. I understand that ATE and Bendix are the standard calipers. I was wondering if anyone had any comments on Raybestos or Beck / Arnley calipers? I'm on a really tight budget, so I'm to find something that isn't as expensive but hopefully isn't total garbage. Both Raybestos and Beck / Arnley seem like pretty good brands, but I was hoping someone had experience with this specific part from them. Thanks

If you are dealing with overhauled parts, they are still going to be ATE or Bendix. They will just be in a box with a different name.

Oh really? Am I correct in thinking that as long as I replace both calipers at once it's fine to use ATE or Bendix? The important thing is that both sides are the same, not that it's the same brand as before right?
If that were the case it wouldn't make much difference which I ordered then. |

Correct. The calipers need to match side to side. ATE or Bendix should not matter.

What needs to match is the bore diameter, not necessarily the brand. See the W123 FSM for details.

Whatever you do, make sure you get the wagon rear calipers. The piston is slightly larger compared to the sedan.

I replaced my rear passengers side from a reputable place online only to see it fail a year later. The next one I bought locally at a one of the chain parts places. It has a lifetime warranty and as another poster has mentioned, the "brand" name you see if the re-builder; the core is genuine OEM.

The part numbers I've found for wagon calipers are:
1234201283 (Right Rear Wagon Caliper) 1234201183 (Left Rear Wagon Caliper) Can anyone confirm these? I don't have the FSM for reference, but if the part number matches it should be the right diameter right? Thanks. |

Yeah the brand is the rebuilder. Id think that Raybestos would have good stuff, but it may well all come from the same factory in Mexico or China.
I was looking at caliper rebuilds for my CD the other day on fastlane, and the world brake resources brand rebuild looked good from the picture, in terms of surface coating and piston interface plate... FWIW. Cant find much on the company though... Another option is to DIY if the piston isnt corroded. Ive never tried.

I've been shopping around and I found a local place with Calipers rebuilt by Cardone for $72 (before core charge). This would be fantastic if they're any good, since the other options are near $200 each (even rebuilt).
Could anyone comment on Cardone as a brand? Or Cardone rebuilt calipers? Thanks. |
