Do you happen to remember the link to that chart you mentioned? it would be interesting to look it up. If it stops raining here, maybe I'll get it in over the weekend to see how it works

If I had the 175 tires that were recommended for the car . . . I would have gotten 40 mpg. However, with the 195 tires, I got 37. I personally didn't notice the diff from 37 to 40 since the car I gave up to own the 190D only got 25. I was ecstatic first fill up!!!! And I had almost no trouble, and almost no breakdowns in 7 years.

Last year I did a compariable mpg rating using the 1984 190d 2.2 5 spd vs any american car or import of today ,the Mercedes placed 5th.The hybrids we not included for obvious reasons but the real surprise is Mercedes has a really good diesel powerplant for the smart car but wont offer it here in the states.Oh yeah ,and nice find to get a real nice 190d ,the 5spd especially is a nice added feature to these little go-cart fun rides.

Yep, but I hardly ever let it get down that low. A couple times I went from philly to Hartford and back on one tank pretty easily which is about 475 miles total (avg speed about 55-60) on the route I take. There was no question whether I'd make it or not, but usually I don't let it get to 1/4 tank on highway trips just in case there isn't a fillup spot for a while.

This guys w210 with 350+ HP managed to get 37+:
1998 E300 W210 Superturbo Project I would love to on day get a good condition 1987 190D Turbo Manual and modify the pump and get it up to about 220HP and see what I could get out of it mpg-wise. I would guess at least 45-50 mpg with PLENTY of additional power! That said, this has turned into a MPG thread rather than what Mercedes has done...so here is something applicable most of us have already seen: http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2009/09/report-bored-mercedes-engineers-drop-modern-250-cdi-diesel-into-190-e-chassis.html Twice the torque and close to twice the horse power and 16 mpg better in same chassis!

[QUOTE=neumann;2847583]Curious as to what the diesel Mercedes hypermilers are getting in their vehicles. Has anyone built a special purpose high mpg diesel Mercedes vehicle?

The mpg on that is close to what I was getting out of my Kawasaki. I rode in a rather squidly manner and got 55-60. The first paragraph in that article mentions stuffing a big motor in a Smart. Here's one with a Hayabusa engine: smart turbo with hayabusa engine - YouTube Me want

Different gearing in diff messing with ALDA to deliver less fuel overall (though most the time we see the opposite)
