it's a 2.24

yeah, it's tall.

Do you happen to remember the link to that chart you mentioned? it would be interesting to look it up. If it stops raining here, maybe I'll get it in over the weekend to see how it works

If I had the 175 tires that were recommended for the car . . . I would have gotten 40 mpg. However, with the 195 tires, I got 37. I personally didn't notice the diff from 37 to 40 since the car I gave up to own the 190D only got 25. I was ecstatic first fill up!!!! And I had almost no trouble, and almost no breakdowns in 7 years.

Last year I did a compariable mpg rating using the 1984 190d 2.2 5 spd vs any american car or import of today ,the Mercedes placed 5th.The hybrids we not included for obvious reasons but the real surprise is Mercedes has a really good diesel powerplant for the smart car but wont offer it here in the states.Oh yeah ,and nice find to get a real nice 190d ,the 5spd especially is a nice added feature to these little go-cart fun rides.

I know I get over 30 on my highway trips unless I hit a ton of traffic (same goes for the 300E). I regularly exceed EPA estimates on all the cars I have ever owned and driven just through having a light foot and anticipating stopping/accelerating. You could call my technique hypermiling but if you were behind me I doubt you would notice it.
so in the SD you could consistently pull off close to 500 miles to a tank?

Yep, but I hardly ever let it get down that low. A couple times I went from philly to Hartford and back on one tank pretty easily which is about 475 miles total (avg speed about 55-60) on the route I take. There was no question whether I'd make it or not, but usually I don't let it get to 1/4 tank on highway trips just in case there isn't a fillup spot for a while.

While certainly it would take a very long time to make up the difference in fuel savings in a new off the lot car and a 25+ year old MB, how about comparing the MB to a 6-10 year old car. A good example of an 80's MB diesel rarely surfaces below $3,000 while one can buy good early 2000's toyota or honda sedans easily for $8,000. Price your indy replacing all the suspension rubber, ball joints, freshen up your steering, drive shaft flex discs, struts / shocks, injectors on the MB, and possibly a timing chain vs a timing belt on your Toyota and the price is now about even. You still have to deal with the crazy climate control, problematic cruise control amp, clock, outside temp display, power windows, etc on your MB. The Toyota you pretty much just add gas, change oil and drive.

Some may have different experiences but I bought a new Toyota Sienna MV in '98. 250,000 miles and 3 kids later the only thing to ever break was a door handle and it was teenager user error. Regular oil changes, 2 timing belts and water pumps, brake pads and tires. My current 158,000 miled MB has needs everywhere I look.

Lots of reasons folks drive MB's. Cost of opperation is probably not a good reson.
I can imagine a 14 year old Toyota needing less maintenance than a 30ish year old Mercedes. Many of the parts on the Mercedes have reached, if not exceeded, expectations.

What's the mpg of that Toyota?

This guys w210 with 350+ HP managed to get 37+:
1998 E300 W210 Superturbo Project

I would love to on day get a good condition 1987 190D Turbo Manual and modify the pump and get it up to about 220HP and see what I could get out of it mpg-wise. I would guess at least 45-50 mpg with PLENTY of additional power!

That said, this has turned into a MPG thread rather than what Mercedes has done...so here is something applicable most of us have already seen:

http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2009/09/report-bored-mercedes-engineers-drop-modern-250-cdi-diesel-into-190-e-chassis.html

Twice the torque and close to twice the horse power and 16 mpg better in same chassis!

[QUOTE=neumann;2847583]Curious as to what the diesel Mercedes hypermilers are getting in their vehicles. Has anyone built a special purpose high mpg diesel Mercedes vehicle?

My first time seeing that. Thanks.

The mpg on that is close to what I was getting out of my Kawasaki. I rode in a rather squidly manner and got 55-60.

The first paragraph in that article mentions stuffing a big motor in a Smart. Here's one with a Hayabusa engine:

What are you looking for? I answered your OP

Different gearing in diff
messing with ALDA to deliver less fuel overall (though most the time we see the opposite)
