126 transmission issues?

My daughter said her 84 SD failed to move forward when she first started it this morning and put it in drive. She turned off engine, restarted, and it moved in drive then. 311k on car, unknown history of tranny. I'm thinking impending b2 failure. Any advantage to a pre-emptive replacement? Should I just wait until it completely craps out? I've noticed that the car does not give any sense of 'grab' (taking the slack out of the drivetrain) when you put the shifter into drive. It's been that way as long as we've owned it but it hasn't failed to move forward before. It does 'grab' in reverse.

Have you changed fluid / checked fluid / changed filter / checked linkage etc?

And how healthy is the engine? Does it idle too low?

No, I haven't done anything other than just write the original post.

The question is whether the B2 gives any warning before failure? From my readings, the piston fractures without any prior symptoms.

Others that actually suffered the failure would be a better resource.

I ran across this link:
b2piston

If I read it correctly, it says there's a possibility of a gradual failure indicated by transmission slippage. I'm not completely sure I'm interpreting that list of symptoms correctly.

I started it myself this morning and it seemed to be fine. There's a possibility the car was parked on very slick ice yesterday and my daughter mistook the tires spinning on the ice for lack of transmission engagement although she said that wasn't the case and once it engaged she felt the tires spin. But, she's a new driver.
