Timing issues
I have a question about the timing for a 4 cylinder engine. When the engine is at top dead center what should the balancer read? For me at top dead center the balancer reads about 34. It this what is should be? If not how do i adjust it?

What is the meaning of "the engine is at top dead center?"

If the Pointer (not bent) and the Crankshaft Balancer/Damper (not loose or twisted) are where they are supposed to be Top Dead Center will be when the Pointer lines up on the OT line.
If the Balancer has become loose or the Pointer has become bent the Factory Service Manual calls for removing the #1 Prechamber and using a Dial Indicator setup with the extension on top of the Piston (Engine rotated in the direction it turns when it is running). In the case of the bent Pointer if you trusted it you could just replace the Pointer. From there you check what the pointer is reading or correct it or line up the loose Balancer and properly pin it. Army came up with another way to do the above. I will let you contact Him or He can describe it himself. However keep in mind that there is a Top Dead Center on the Compression Stroke and again on the Exhaust Stroke.

what happened was that the vacuum pump disintegrated and i suspect that the debris from it jammed in the chain and caused the chain to skip. How to i adjust the timing? Do i take off the balancer?
Also, the compression stroke is when the first valve in being pressed? |
