173 mpg diesel Honda. What's the best any MB has done?

Curious as to what the diesel Mercedes hypermilers are getting in their vehicles. Has anyone built a special purpose high mpg diesel Mercedes vehicle?

The mention of the Honda example was included to be a catalyst for discussion. Thanks

VW has made a 1 cylinder engine, 2 seater car that gets 280mpg.

It can be done, but the car ain't gonna be SUV sized like all us Americans like.

When I was running veggie oil, I once got 175mpg on the diesel fuel I paid for, does that count.

I would say the mb diesels do not necessarily lend themselves to super high mileage here in the states...we don't have a 4cyl from them. If I were to buy or build a car based strictly on economy id get the vw tdi...also the new skyactiv mazda diesels coming soon have a lot of hype.

As far as "hypermiling" I've noticed that few members on here do so, and then when mpg figures come back they are shot down...been there and done that. Some modifications that I've seen include replacing the rear end for lower gearing for highway cruising though, and some tweaking of the fuel delivery (I.e.) alda

I should mention I consistently get over 30mpg in my 300e and iirc hit 34 in my 300sd but I'd have to double check that one...I know I've hit 33 before

'84 - '86 2.2 liter 190D is a 4 cylinder to go along with the 240D 4 cylinder.

Yes, I meant new models, sorry I should have been more clear. Rumor is that MB will bring a 4cyl to the US for 2013 but I believe it still remains a rumor. Newer diesels are more efficient and better adapted to our current fluid technology and roads. Our Jetta TDI gets between 50-55mpg highway and that is more powerful, about the same size and weight (marginally lighter) than the w123 and 190D. By saying all this I mean that our old MB engines aren't great at hypermiling or for super high mpgs, if that is a priority. However the low initial cost and relatively low maintenance means a great value even if you're only getting 25-30mpg....it would take a long time to make the difference between the price of a Jetta TDI and a w123 for example...just depends on priorities really.

Youve hit 34 mpg in an SD? The best I can get is 24 but I mostly get about 20.

I have to double check on 34, I know I've hit 33. My car/logs are not with me at the moment. That is all highway driving, no city/traffic. Around town I would get about 25-28. I know I get over 30 on my highway trips unless I hit a ton of traffic (same goes for the 300E). I regularly exceed EPA estimates on all the cars I have ever owned and driven just through having a light foot and anticipating stopping/accelerating. You could call my technique hypermiling but if you were behind me I doubt you would notice it.

Hmmm. If I could get 26 on a regular basis that would be awesome. I would never drive the mazda.

33 regularly on the highway, city is way down though and some modifications.
