Taking the Fuel Injection Pump apart is not so hard. Assembling it the way it is supposed to be requires special knowledge, a Fuel Injection Pump Test Stand and the Test specs.

The Elements are not directly swappable with out doing the adjustments.

As an example: Once the new Elements are in place you need to use a Degree Wheel to flow time each Element as each Element has a begin Injection at X degrees.
To set this you substitute different sizes Shims/Spacers on the roller tappets.
After that is set you would properly install all of the Delivery Valve parts and Torque the Delivery Valve Holders properly.

After that the Fuel Injection Pump goes on the Test stand that drives the Fuel Injection Pump and you will be adjusting the Idle and maximum Fuel amount and any Fuel amount that the Pump would give if it had a Torque Capsule.

The flow of each Element is measured at the various setting speeds and rack extension and the Fuel amount for each element is set individually. And I can say from experience that a tiny bit of movement of the adjustment screw on the Rack can cause the Fuel amount to change dramatically.

You would be coordinating the above with the movement of the Rack and the Governor + Torque capsule if any.
The High and Low idle speeds are set.

I worked 5 years in a Fuel Injection Shop; part of my job being the rebuilding of Fuel Injection Pumps.

Some of it can be a little frustrating. Just like the Injectors need to be balanced so does the Fuel output of the Elements. Sometimes I would run into situation where that would be OK at idle but not at the Full load or good at full load but not at idle.

It is more important that the Fuel output between the Elements is closest at Full Load then at idle. In fact if it is unbalanced too much at Full Load you can break Crankshafts (more likely on Truck that are actually hauling something).

But, were you customer is going to notice the unbalance is when the Engine is idling; and they will complain.
So you end up compromising.

Then when you mess with the Fuel adjustment on the rack it tends to jump higher or lower than you want it to; you need to play with it till it is right.
