300SD with hacked up wiring. Climate control not working.

Hi!

I have a 1980 300SD, and the previous owner evidently tried to fix various problems themselves by bypassing various wiring and components.

For example, the climate control servo has been bypassed (or they attempted to bypass it at least). The top plastic part with the wires is still there, but the cylinder is gone. In the top part there are some wires that have been added to connect some wiring points.

The problem is that the climate control doesn't work. It SEEMS like it heats up (patches of condensation dry up by the vents), but the fan just doesn't blow the air. I need it for defogging and defrosting mainly. I've been driving around wiping down the inside of the windshield with a rag so I can see out.

What advice can you give me, other than sell the car? I'm looking for a way to get the heat and blower working, and that's about it. If I can just get it defogging/defrosting I'll be happy.

You could start by reading these two threads:

Edit: Actually I copied the wrong thread for #2. I deleted the link.

AHA! Thanks! I found the blower motor behind the glove compartment, tested it, it had power going to it, so I hit it on the side with a screwdriver and it started up!

So I know the problem now at least, and it's not as bad as I thought!

If the motor was stuck, it can draw a lot of current, which can overheat or melt fuses. Some maintenance should be in order to find out why banging on it got it moving.

Could be worn brushes. I have a thread on here with pictures showing the replacement of brushes on a 116 blower motor.
