Otto - mine is an '81 300SD. I do not remember removing two screws; just wiggled the dome out of the press fit. The nut is under the dome. Not sure what you removed; did you by chance take a pic?

When Adjusting my VCV I removed the throttle linkage at the lower ball joint.
Undid the two screws to lift the VCV from it's mounting point, now I had it in my hand but with the hoses connected and the engine at idle. Undid the two screws holding the door and removed the door giving me access to the adjusting nut and spring shaft holding flat. With a thinned down flat wrench on the flats and a firm grip on the nut with a socket I rotated the spring shaft CW 1/4 turn . The vacuum went up from 15"Hg to a little over 17"Hg. the low end still at 2" . Now is the time to leave well enough alone. I took Brian's advice and turned the modulator in two notches to get a upshift I can just feel. Driving around with a smile. EDIT: with the vacuum on the VCV, engine running, I move the VCV from open to closed and could see the results of my adjustment on a gauge teed into the line to the trani.
