What is a fair selling price? 81 300td

Hi all,

First time poster, long time reader.

I have the w123 bug. I bought one from a friend and proceeded to fix it up a bit, perform regular maintenance etc through the use of information on this forum.
Now I have bought another, this one is an 80 300td. It needs some tinkering so I think I will sell the 81 and start messing with the new one.

Long story long, what is a good fair price to sell it for.
Good overall condition, shiny white paint. One dent in the drivers side rear door. Runs and drives good, daily driver or commuting .
Some things don't work, rear wiper, odometer, tach. It's not collector condition, but a nice driver. I'm in the pnw and I think I'd like to keep flipping these cars as a hobby until I find one I can't live without.

Hard to tell from just one small pic, but I would think about $3k would be fair if I was looking for one of those.

... in the condition you describe it's a 1500 ish car. unless the one thing you didn't mention... Rust is present, then all bets are off.
keep in mind, the 81 is the first turbo model, the ONLY electronic speedo 123, and you don't mention if it's 100 rear seat, or 60/40 split, also you don't mention roof bars, third row seat, etc...

Well I know it's more than 1500, you can't find a rusty one in Portland for less than 2.
It has intact factory roof bars shiny with no rust.
We don't use salt here in Portland, no rust on the car, anywhere. I don't remember what type of wheels they are. I'll look tomorrow.

Thanks for the multiple replies. I love these cars.

On the west coast you cant even get a 300td with no engine or a blown transmission for under $2k. Drivers start at $2500 no matter how rough they are.

We need to know the condition of the interior, mileage and condition of the motor, tranny and AC system too. Does the leveling suspension work? Condition of brakes tires, shocks etc.

It looks to me as if it could be anywhere up to five thousand depending on condition. Proper presentation with a clean shiny car and lots of clear pictures will sell it as well as possible.

Look at Tyler's posts about cars he has for sale and you will get an idea of how to present cars for selling at the best price possible.

... wow.
I need to load up my trailer and bring a few cars up there to sell!

but really, with the information that's been provided, aside from location, a fair price is not really possible to ascertain.

crossbars are a great bonus, certainly factor those into the price for the car.

if the car's in PREMIUM condition, it's possible for it to be worth $15K (highly unlikely, but possible) with Vegoil being harder to collect, and diesel fuel prices skyrocketing, the diesel vehicles are not pulling the demand they once had.

well, considering they are as rare as hen's teeth, and impossible to buy new, finding a set on a wagon for sale, is a cool bonus. they RARELY even come up on ebay...
I bet they could be worth 300 or more.
I think the most sought after option is the third row seat, along with the 60/40 split rear seat, then the cargo net, and the cover... also having all three rear head rests along with the third row seat is nice. toss in leather seats, and you've got an amazing car, if the seats have the extremely rare heated option no price is too high...
without any of these options... it's all about condition and demand...

I've "flipped" about 30 MBs and 10 W123s specifically. Started 3 years ago fixing and selling an '80 300TD and now have a full blown dealership store. I think you'll find it hard to sell one that's in the middle like this. Either they're top notch and bring top dollar from a top tier buyer, or not and attract someone who is looking for a bargain and doesn't mind warts or sweat equity. These folks generally do not overpay. Occasionally you get someone new to the scene or buying on emotion.

I have no idea with West coast pricing. People seem to pay alot more. I've sold cars to California folks who flip them for more. I really should keep track of how many states my cars have gone.

I've sold near perfect 200k examples with rebuilt suspensions, everything working, major service records, etc, in the high 6k range fairly quickly... probably could have gotten more if I held out. Before 2008 with the economy and the veggie oil fad, double that price would have been attainable.

You are also going to have a very hard time selling it with a broken odometer and unknown mileage. Been there done that. If it were mine I'd get as much working as possible. Having a working odometer, tach, AC, and everything else, along with being thoroughly clean can make a several thousand dollar difference. You say you like tinkering, and your list of to-dos could be tackled in a weekend on a shoestring budget with used parts and you could do fresh fluids all around to give the next owner a baseline on maintenance. You're shorting yourself alot leaving simple things unfinished and allowing the car to present doubt or easy haggle points.

I've sold more W123s than anything else, but haven't had one in almost a year. They're just not bringing the money they used to, and getting on 30 years old with 30 year old car problems. Not even the invincible W123 can escape aging rubber, gasket, and plastic components.

I disagree that leather and ultra rare heated seats bring a premium. The third row generally does, but not much of a boost in driver cars. I'd pull the crossbars and sell them separately.

Seriously, if you could make money selling driveable 300tds with little to no rust for $3k, you should try it. They are quite expensive here.

just some pics for all of you.

Well the more I mess with this car the less I want to sell it, so maybe ill just sell the 80 non turbo wagon instead.

Lightly cleaned it today and put the original wheels back on. Here are some quick pics in a parking garage.

in response to all the good info i received. I previously had serviced all the fluids, replaced the battery, put a shift kit in when I serviced the tranny with new fluid, filter and gasket. I may try to tackle the tach soon as well as the rear wiper buttons. So its not like I got it and did nothing, its just a fun hobby and Id like to start working on the other one. Need room in the driveway. As a clarification as to the value, cleaning the car I did find some rust, a little on the doors where they contact the seal on the body, so it isnt totally rust free as I had thought.

Thanks for looking,

HH
