I agree, its going to be a funhouse when Im done. The current space has a very low ceiling, the new one is almost 3 stories high. I can build another floor in places, and even a third storage level. its only 1300 sqf, but multiply that by 3 depending on how much I want to build. Im at least going to add another 600 sqf second story office/storage space.

Everything but the spray booth and shot blasting cabinet will be installed. I will look around for a used sandblaster, but painting is pretty much forbidden in this new space. Its ok, im not fond of that really, much rather pay someone else to do it!

before and after

Some other interesting facts about this car, the body has 350k on it, but it has a documented 90k replacement engine installed at about 290k, so it will probably hit 500k on the body easy without major issues. Amazingly, the automatic transmission and torque converter were original, and both had 350k on them! How about that for longevity, I complain about automatics all the time, but this thing can probably still keep going with a B2 installed.

And its gone!

PO took it back earlier tonight, I charged her what I had in it for parts plus a low rate for installation, so I feel good about the transaction. Was worth it to keep that 240 out of the yard.

Once again you have done your magic on another fine piece of engenering. It will be a different 240 with the manual transmission, hope she enjoys it, as much as you did helping her. you are a good friend.

I notice it has the old Becker Europa Cassett AM/FM analog radio, don`t see them very often.

update-

lol, she is not happy with the 4-speed / 4cyl NA combination.

Ironically, the reason why is that swapping this car over to a manual put her in direct contact with exactly how gutless a 240D is.

Before, she could plod along simply depressing the throttle, and it would get up to speed, but she tells me that shifting such a powerless car is making her extremely nervous about highway merging and other situations where acceleration is key. Previously, she was not so in touch with the difficulty of increasing speed

We are discussing alternate plans. Perhaps engine swaps

unfortunately, this broke almost immediately after the swap. Another nail in the coffin for this car.

well, I kind of blew it and mentioned that I had read on the internet about people swapping in gas V8s. I said that, and I saw a gleam of excitement. Im not sure what route will be taken with this car, but it turns out her uncle is a serious domestic gearhead, and has been pressing to turn this car into a hot rod for the last 20 years to her father and later her.

I think she's seriously entertaining the idea of building a gas sleeper out of this car, as kind of a juxtaposition to its current incredible slowness. We will see

How about the engine from my 83 300D turbo? It runs incredible. It would save me from doing work on the front fenders.

Well I think it is high time someone did an OM606 or even an OM613 conversion in a W123. Dropnosky - I think you might just be that man! I do think she'd be happier with an automatic transmission though...

The building equivalent of this is people moving from a mobile home to a concrete earth sheltered home.

Great story!

Drop-

Just getting caught up on this thread. Couldn't help but notice that the pic of the auto console "seemed" to have a pint of Tequila on the passenger floor, which is conspicuously missing in the "manual" shot. Is that your secret for cleaning parts? 8 ^)

Nice work BTW.....I thought you were potentially planning a 617 swap????? Getting away from a diesel is verboten!!! Moderator would have to move this thread over to the Frankenstein area......

Do gas V8s bolt up to a 4 speed or would you digress to an automatic (again)?

PK
