83 Mercedes 300D Motor Mount Replacement

Driver's Side Engine Motor Mount Replacement on 1983 Mercedes 300D (will work for 300SD and probably all others in that range)

PLEASE NOTE: I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BREAK YOUR CAR OR GET INJURED BY USING THIS TUTORIAL. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I recommend doing one motor mount at a time. There is a chance if you take both out at the same time that you might not get the motor to line up again (at least not easily.) The passenger side motor mount is not much different then this tutorial on the drivers side.

Tools Needed:
  • 6mm Hex (wrench and socket)
  • 8mm Hex (socket)
  • ¼ and 3/8 Rachet and Metric Sockets
  • Floor Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Block of wood (that is wider than oil pan)
  • Cheater pipe for rachet's
  • Pliers and/or channel locks and/or vice grips

Process:
  • Jack up front of car and place on jack stands
  • Remove 8mm hex on bottom or motor mount, best to use a 3/8 rachet with a 8mm hex socket, I had to use a cheater bar since it was so tight. (see pic)

Next, remove 1 of 2, 6mm Hex that holds the motor mount to the frame. (see pic)

Next step is to remove the engine shock. The engine shock always gets damaged when a motor mount collapses so you will need to replace it. The shock is not crucial to holding the engine down so you don't have to replace it but know that the car will shake a little without it. I've never replaced the shocks because they are so expensive but I will on this car because it is so nice.

To remove the engine shock there is one nut under the car and 2 on top. The bottom nut is difficult because you need to grasp the shock with vice grips, pliers or channel locks and then loose the bottom nut. Once that is off you can go back up top and remove the two bolts holding the shock housing down. (see pic)

After removing the engine shock it’s time to jack up the motor. DO NOT JACK THE MOTOR UP TO FAR!! You can break all kinds of stuff and cost yourself a fortune or you could make your car’s value drop to scrap value. I jack the motor up just enough to where the old motor mount can come out. YOU STILL HAVE ONE BOLT LEFT BEFORE REMOVING MOUNT. We had to jack up the motor to be able to get it out. That bolt is located on top of the motor mount opposite to where the other 6mm hex bolt was. You will need to use the 6mm hex wrench to get it out. I found the best way is from the top, not lying under the car. (NOTE: On my 300SD I had to do it from under the car.)

Once you’ve removed the last bolt it’s time to get that old mount out and put the new one in. You’re new one might not fit until you jack the motor up more (you will be amazed at how low your engine was sitting!)

Replace the 6mm hex bolts and tighten them down. After that you will need to slowing lower your engine until it sits on the motor mount. Keep the jack tight as you may have to jack the engine back up and reposition. Once you've lowered the engine onto the mount, crawl under the car and see if you can get the 8mm hex bolt in, if you can then lower engine until it’s sitting on the mount with all it’s weight (don’t remove the jack until you have the bolt in and tight.)

Reinstall 8mm hex and tighten. Congratulations you just replaced a motor mount!

If you are going to replace the engine shock you can do that later without jacking motor up or disconnecting anything.
