How much excellent condition manual 240D worth?
Some guy nearby is advertising an excellent condition manual 240D with 130,000 miles. What do you folks think the market will bear? He's asking $7500, but that seems high to me.

Well if not exposed on ebay he may be very receptive to a much lower price. The main thing as well is it has to be what he is representing. So many if not the vast majority are not.
At a true 130k well maintained and needing basically nothing I would think around the 4k mark. That is just my opinion though and what I might pay. Certainly no more. |

Each car must be inspected and priced individually. Being in the salt belt, check for rust.
Sellers have been known to believe their car is a cream puff.

for 7500 bucks, you can fly first class to CA, spend a week relaxing and searching for a nice rust free 4-speed 240, pay 2 to 3 grand for it, and drive it back staying at quality hotels, with a short stop in vegas to play the tables.
I think that price is outrageous, for that much money, every single thing on the car must work and be in perfect shape.

Dropnosky has that one right on. But it is low mileage and if he/she can prove that it only spent the last 6 months, (summer) in the rust belt after spending all its years in some balmy summer State and then garaged also, it might be worth $5000.00. But it has to be really clean and sharp, noooooo rust, no worn out burned up smelly interior. I mean really nice!

Well, it's been in RI at least most of its life...ad says it's been maintained by same mechanic since 1989.

Yeah, X2 on that. That's a premium price for sure. Especially given your area and the winters it's may or may not seen. Sure, there are cars out there worth that (garage kept all their life, meticulous maintenance records saved and all documentation organized) , just few and far between. The 240D is a GREAT car though. Simplistic, and a pleasure to own!

For what he's asking I would be hoping for a one-owner car with full records.
At very worst, a car with two long-time owners (not some guy flipping a one-owner car). With full records or something close. For $7500 the underside shouldn't show a hint of rust and rot is out of the question. Door seals, windlacing (door felt), interior pieces, gauge needles, seat padding and surfaces, the wood -- the whole shebang should be way above the average. In my experience, there are 240d 'purists' who will pay that sort of money for a stick car with low mileage.

shertex,
i cannot imagine a car in RI all its life not having any rust issues. under the battery box, hood hinge pockets, inside and around the sunroof drains and rear floorboards. look very closely. the absolute max I would pay for that vehicle is $3-4k if it was perfect. its slow (even if perfect) compared to what you're used to for sure. dd

That may be an experience alone. So may the real condition of the car one way or another.

Well, there is what a willing buyer will pay and what a willing seller will accept. I am the original owner of my 240D, have records down to recording every tank of fuel the car ever had with mpg calculated. Car is in really nice shape, but what is the market value? Probably in the $3 to $4K range max that you guys are talking about. However, to me, someone would have have to offer me $7500 for me to let it go. It's worth more to me to keep it than to let it go for what the market says it's worth.

To put it in another way....
There seem to be people out there for whom the w123 240d (and to some extent, the 300td) are the only car on the planet. For such people the market value is largely irrelevant. If you happen to be of that mindset, and you find a really nice example, and I mean truly nice (not fixed up and tarted to just look so), then $7500 might well look like reasonable money. If there's nowhere else to go, and nothing else you want... what's the alternative?
