help with parts lookup

I got a differential from what I think was a 1983 500SEC to swap into my 1985 300TD. I want to do seals (pinion and axle) for the SEC diff before I install it in the TD. Trouble is now I am wondering if the car I got it from at the Pick N Pull was a 380SEC that a coke-snorting Miami Vice guy put a 500SEC badge on. Can anyone with parts lookup capability tell me if it matters? I'm guessing the 1983 380SEC and the 1983 500SEC have the same diff, but I don't know for sure. Thanks!!!!

Never mind. Found an online source and it looks like the 1983 380SEC and the 1985 500SEC are the same. So I figure that any V8 126 in that year range is going to be the same.

Getting excited to have that 2.47 rear end in the wagon!

Hey snowtire good to see you here too.

Check out EverythingBenz - Mercedes-Benz Forum and Web Search Using Google

for lots of comparison pictures - and sometimes the part numbers are good too!

Your 85 TD will have a 2:88 Differential.
The Sec could be a 2:47.

Look at the lower left corner of the diff case, the number is spamped there.

Do you know how to set the friction preload on the pinion nut?
