If your 300D is like my 350SDL every body panel has a VIN tag on it. It's also on the plate in the door jam IIRC. Additionally the VIN is stamped into the firewall.
You could probably get a service guy at a MB dealer to write you a letter saying the tag on the A pillar is factory. -J

Open the hood and look down. Open the driver door and look towards the back.

What a bimbo. Guess that is what minimum wage will get you. Hell, print out this thread and give it to them. Every older Benz I have seen has a tag in the A-Pillar. Do we all need to take pics and post them? lol

Imagine the pain I went through when I tried to register my car. Somebody had written a 4 as an A on the title and me and my hubby were going around in circles for weeks trying to get it straightened out! Finally we talked to a higher-up person and she pretty much said "Screw it" and registered my car anyway

State employees are .... < self censored >
Just understand that they work there for a reason. Take it to another DMV - eventually you'll find a normal person that doesn't have an attitude, and you will get the job done.

US 124s have the VIN stamped into the panel that separates the battery from the main engine compartment, just on the other side of the monovalve. I don't know if your Euro will have a VIN in this location and if so whether it's the same VIN on the title and registration. Isn't there a California Bureau of Automotive Repair tag in the driver door jamb certifying that the car meets California requirements for registration? I won't touch a Euro car in California without a BAR tag. The tag from the 80s looks like this -

This one isn't the euro. That one past perfect. This is my parts car that I alreqdy paid the registration for. They won't refund my money or register it. I will look on the door. If you die and go to hell.......you end up at dmv!!

what state is this?
cops do VIN verification too, can you run it by a neighborhood branch office and have them do it? Just coming back to this nitwit with a signed form? I had to go through this exact same BS trying to register an 8ft 200 dollar utility trailer in NY in addition to having it weighed and measured, and a safety inspection. Same as an aircraft, the dmv will assign a VIN to a trailer, and the owner must find a way to attach it to the trailer in whatever fashion. Cops ended up taking all kinds of pictures, writing all kinds of forms, and this offering satisfied the demon of bureaucracy. Ironically, if I had just ripped the flipping vin plate off the trailer, I could have registered it home made, and walked out of the DMV with a plate, newly issued VIN, and a smile in about 15 minutes without doing any inspections apart from safety.

Something's not right. There was no US spec 300D in the '86 model year. The US 124.133 was only available in the '87 model year, but that means they were available from August or September '86. Regardless, if it's a US car, it should be easy to point out the VIN stamping in the engine bay to the DMV agent -
Not to mention the VIN decal on the fender by the hood hinge. Every original removable body panel has a VIN decal. Sixto 87 300D |
