Glow plug install cost?
 

Ok, I'm now convinced that I don't want to get into replacing the glow plugs on my 95 E 300 Diesel (606 engine) myself.

Can anyone give me an idea what an indy should charge to replace all 6 glowplugs?

I hope the below does not happen to you!

On the Engines that have Aluminum Cylinder Heads it is not unusual for one of the Glow Plugs to snap off before they come out.

When this happens most Mechanics want to remove the Cylinder Head from the Engine and send it to a Machine Shop.

Sending the Cylinder Head to a Machine Shop is the safest thing for them because if they try to drill out the Glow Plug and damge the Head they will be responsable; also they get to charge the extra work of removing and installing the Cylinder Head.

If all of your Glow Plugs have been previously replaced it may not be as likely one will break.

When the Glow Plugs are out the Carbon in the Glow Plug holes should be reamed or other wise cleaned out.

When the New Glow Plugs are installed Beru Glow Plug Grease or a Never Seeze type compound will decrease the chance of them sticking again.

He'll charge about two hours labor............maybe $180.00............if NOTHING goes wrong.

If one of them gets stuck...........or it breaks............the cost goes up dramatically.

Unless he's a skilled M/B mechanic who knows that engine well, handing him the keys is going to be more painful than sticking needles in your eyes.

Yes, Painful indeed! Didn't I read somewhere where. another forum member took his 95 OM606 to have the plugs changed and it was or did cost him $600 or $800 bucks because a couple of the plugs got stuck? I thought I read it someplace on here..

This might be one job that getting an estimate from the Mercedes Dealer might be helpful.

The Dealer at least has access to a drill out kit. Although even the Dealer may not decide to drill the Glow Plug out in their shop.

Calling on the Telephone and asking various Shops what they charge and if the have experience removing broken Glow Plugs or what they would do if Glow Plugs break off will cost you nothing. Being on the Telephone allows you to have more "Sales Resistance" then if you are in person.

I thought that the drill out kit only works on 96 forward 606s. Its a freakin dreadful job on the 95.

After reading this thread, I gave my 617's a hug!

And I change my oil too often.

Use this stuff: ARP-bolts.com | ARP Ultra-Torque when installing the new ones.

617 is like the girl you want to marry. The 606...well, she's nice too, but...glow plugs, evaporator, etc. The longer I own both a 617 and a 606, the more I like the 617. I mean I really like my 85. Its kind of like a zombie lawnmower that never dies.

You may be correct on that.

On newer than my 1984 W123 I have to pick up what knowlege I can from the various Forums or the Manuals I have access to.
